Isn't the colour of ATF dependent on the brand ?

865863 2010-03-12 00:21:00 The reason for the red is to warn users that it is metric oil so should be used with care and suitable precautions. R2x1 (4628)

What in heavens name is 'metric oil'? The metric system deals with weights and measures, not grades of oil, or is that a modern adaptation of the word with an entirely new (US?) meaning?

I thought the colours were to differentiate hydraulic fluids from lubricating oils.

Metric oil has the kinematic viscosity measured in Centistokes, whereas US Pennsylvanian (Imperial) oil has the viscosity measured in Saybolt or Redwood seconds....easy

865867 2010-03-12 02:35:00 Metric oil is slung out in mL or L, whereas proper oil is lovingly crafted and delicately delivered in ounces, pints, quarts, gallons, barrels, hogsheads and tuns. This enables it to fit precisely into the application.
Lucas oil comes in puddles.
