1142835 2010-10-09 04:15:00 Hi Team

I updated Firefox and Adobe Reader today, but later on I noticed that I had an icon for McAfee Security Scan Plus on my desktop. I promptly uninstalled it via add/remove programs but I'm baffled as to how it managed to get installed in the first place. I always watch any update or installation processes to prevent any shenanigans like that but this one snuck past me.

I also received an email asking me to activate AR so that was a new one to me too. So far I have ignored it! Current installed version is 9.3.4

Cheers

1142836 2010-10-09 04:26:00 Adobe Reader installs it.

They must have felt they had bloated their own crappy program enough for the time being so have bundled someone elses useless bloatware in with the package.

You do have the option of not getting it, but you have to be looking to see it.

1142838 2010-10-09 05:58:00 I find that when it comes to scrolling through a 2000-page PDF ebook, Adobe Reader seems to render it smoother than Foxit. Renmoo (66)

1142841 2010-10-09 06:38:00 Unfortunately the clone readers are slower to implement changes made to the "standard" and you can never be sure they are rending everything that is in the document.

I'd assume this is a deliberate tactic on the part of Adobe, If its critical that the document is viewed in its entirety then I'd suggest using Adobe bloat no matter how much it does suck.

1142842 2010-10-09 06:43:00 The paid Foxit Reader has no advertising, BUT the free one these days installs "Askbar" automatically, even though you can untick the option.

So when installing Foxit Reader, Untick askbar - then run Revo-uninstaller in advanced mode, remove it from the list - askbar is then gone. Its not in the remove programs list (what ever OS you are using).

Geez Metla, that rings a bell, and I'm dead sure I unchecked that box, but I didn't read what it was about, I just noted the option and unticked it. I never accept "options" they are always available later if I find I need them. Maybe I missed with my click.

I think opt-outs are a scam, it should be opt-in only but the chances of that ever happening are about the same as the Tooth Fairy marrying Santa Claus!

I use Adobe Reader because it works better for reading and I have to read a lot of PDFs. I use Bullzip for writng PDFs, it seems to do a 100% job every time.

1142844 2010-10-09 09:19:00 I hate those damn sneaky installs, too.

I have switched to Foxit a couple of times but am back with AR because Foxit crashed just too often.
