1142771 2010-10-09 00:34:00 I'm looking at buying a new monitor. Can someone tell me/give advice re the benefits for and against buying one with DVI and or HDMI connections? I use my computer mainly for photo and video editing along with the other usual stuff. I'm not a gamer and don't watch tv on it. tophook (10328)
1142772 2010-10-09 00:35:00 Basically the same. Except HDMI carries sound and video. DVI doesnt Speedy Gonzales (78)
1142773 2010-10-09 00:48:00 Thanks for quick reply Speedy! Does that mean with video editing no sound will be heard at all on the finished disk? Will HDMI show photos or video in full HD output and with a 24" monitor will it show previously home made disks 4:3 as 16:9? Not sure if I'm putting this correctly so please bear with me if not. tophook (10328)

No, audio will still be in the video and can be played back through your pc speakers.

Will HDMI show photos or video in full HD output

That depends if your screen is true HD - 1920x1080 some screens have HDMI but lower resolutions.

and with a 24" monitor will it show previously home made disks 4:3 as 16:9?

Most widescreen monitors have a mode that can switch between 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratio. Most Software video players can also handle that.

1142775 2010-10-09 00:55:00 Umm no, if the original video / whatever has sound it'll have sound. Since you've still got a soundcard. If the monitor is full HD (1920*1080), then whatever will show in HD (altho, it'll probably help if the video is in HD format)

16:9 is widescreen, so if the monitor is widescreen, and the video is in 16:9, then it'll probably show in WS

1142777 2010-10-09 01:03:00 No probs. Take note, if you want to use HDMI you need a card with a HDMI connection. And the cable (if you dont have one). Just in case you dont have one Speedy Gonzales (78)
1142778 2010-10-09 01:25:00 Thanks Speedy, my present video card (xfx n'vidia 8600gt) has a DVI port so I'll have to buy a new one to use the HDMI. Might stick with DVI for now and see how that goes. Once again, thanks for the help. tophook (10328)
1142779 2010-10-09 01:32:00 No probs ! DVI should be good enough tho. This monitor has HDMI (and the vidcard does). But I use DVI as well. Since, I use the HDMI on the monitor for the Xbox Speedy Gonzales (78)
