1142203 2010-10-06 21:10:00 Could be something is shorting on the PC when you plug it in.By any chance are they the front USB ports ?

If they are the front ports, then try the USB ports on the back - what happens?

Had a customer who has a HP, same problem, changed the front ports to another USB Header on the board and its fine now.

Your problem may be different BUT:

Mine was doing the same a while back, and I ended up having to replace the motherboard, because a short had damaged the internal USB connections, anything plugged into them, caused an instant crash - rear ports were fine.

1142204 2010-10-06 23:29:00 Could be some weird driver problem though too

What does the BSOD actually say?

1142205 2010-10-07 00:26:00 Try the back USB port 1st. They are more reliable.
I have seen bad front ports 'take out'(fry) a new Ipod :badpc:
The stick could be infected with a virus or have some other autorun setup on it that the PC doesnt like.
Also could be some issue with the AV software, the automatic USB scan may be crashing.

Just how old is the PC
perhaps the PC is USB1 only & that is causing some issues??
Try a chkdsk of that stick on the PC it works on. Perhaps reformat it.

1142206 2010-10-07 19:58:00 Hi all, its a newish computer good for usb2, tried plugging the flash drive in the back- still crashed.
When it crashes the screenm goes blue and a bunch of words appear but only briefly but it says 'starting physical memory dump' with a bunc of ooo' s at the bottem but I don't have time to see much more than that. It happens with a couple of different flash drives so I susspect a computer fault rather than a flash drive one.

1142207 2010-10-07 20:17:00 Could be corrupted USB drivers.

You can try this - right click on "My Computer" / properties /Hardware Tab / Device manager / Scroll down till you get to the USB controllers, Select each one and uninstall.

When they have all been uninstalled, reboot the PC, on reboot, the PC "Should" automatically find the controllers and reinstall them.

Note: if you have a password on your login, AND use a USB mouse or keyboard, then remove the password first, as the mouse and keyboard wont work till the controllers reinstall. IF using PS2 KB/Mouse, then no need to worry, they will still work fine.

whats the actual last two numbers in the 0x000000?? BSOD

1142208 2010-10-07 20:51:00 You can turn off automatic restart so that you can see the BSOD error code properly:

1 . Right Click on "My Computer"

2 . Click "Properties"

3 . In the System Properties window, click on the Advanced tab .

4 . Locate the Startup and Recovery area and click on the Settings button .

5 . In the Startup and Recovery window, locate and uncheck the check box next to Automatically restart .

6 . Click OK in the Startup and Recovery window .

7 . Click OK in the System Properties window .

8 . From now on, when a problem causes a BSOD or another major error that halts the system, the PC will not automatically reboot . Rebooting manually will be necessary .
