1142005 2010-10-06 03:00:00 I have problems trying to install Vista SP1 & SP2. Many attempts to install have failed due to SQL Server 2005 SP3 error. Fails with error code 42B. Google search shows many have same problem. One article Q29031 has been updated and Microsoft advise uninstall Office 2007 and reinstall. My question - can I uninstall SQL (I don't use) and if so will Office 2007 operate OK without it. Will SP1 & SP2 install without SQL? I guess the final solution is uninstall Office 2007 and re-install plus SP1 & 2 and all subsequent updates. Thx Robnhd (16012)
1142006 2010-10-06 03:06:00 Dont think SQL has been installed on any of these (wouldnt know what it is or how to use it anyway, if it was), and SP1 and SP2 installed no probs at all

HOW did you try and install SP1 and 2?? Through windowsupdate, or did you get the files manually then install them? I also use Office 2007. I cant remember SQL being part of that either

1142007 2010-10-06 03:08:00 Welcome to PressF1 Rob! Something is buggered, I'd start by running this (support.microsoft.com)tool, see if that makes any difference and go from there. :2cents: wratterus (105)
1142008 2010-10-06 03:18:00 SQL would have been installed if you installed Business Contact Manager from the 2nd Office disc. CYaBro (73)

I tried to install from Windows update and when that was not working got the CDs from Microsoft and tried them. All bombed out!

Thanks for the info. Have read the article and that's a starting point.

1142011 2010-10-06 04:35:00 WHAT firewalls are installed? Thats one thing that can cause this error code 42B. Also try the post here by topspeak www.microsoft.com Speedy Gonzales (78)

I turned off the firewall on some of the attempts.
It appears that SQL is not needed so will made a restore point and uninstall.
Thanks for your help.

Also the Topspeak thread 29031 is an old one as Microsoft have changed the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility - you can only uninstall Office 2007.
