868900 2010-03-21 00:03:00 Hi All

I'm a long time lurker and occasional poster. I'm also a Year 4 (7.5 - 8.5 years) primary school teacher in the Hutt Valley (Wgtn).

I've got a lad in my class who is a gifted student - his work is always very well done, neatly presented and shows a great deal of insight. He's an eager and thoughtful contributor in class. He's a very quick learner when it comes to new experiences and skill sets such as ICT. In short he's got a great attitude towards his studies and life in general - qualities you dont always see in kids his age unfortunately. This is despite a difficult home life/situation which means that money (and opportunities) are short.

Because I'm a bit of an ICT nut/enthusiast we've been doing a fair bit of ICT related work in class; it's also been a part of their homework as well. We've use wallwisher.com, Microsoft Office, Google Earth and the internet in general. I'm currently in the process of setting up/developing a classroom website using Google Apps. 95% of my children have access to a PC and the Internet at home -- 4 kids dont (including this lad).

I was hoping that someone, somewhere out there had an older, (still) working PC that they were no longer using and was surplus to requirements that they could donate for this lad to use at home. You can be assured that it would be going to a worthy recipient who would use it well

I would like to be able to do this myself, but with 4 kids, a mortgage etc I'm unable to do much bar providing him with the O/S software (if required), a keyboard and mouse. He would also need a monitor if someone was able to donate that as well.

Many thanks for your consideration - it'll be interesting to see what eventuates.

Feel free to post on here if you are able to assist or just PM me.

Many Thanks & Warm Regards

Paul

PS: I'm trying to acquire 2-3 extra PCs 2nd hand via TradeMe or something similar that I can put into my room to increase our in-room ICT resources. If anyone knows of any possible sources/deals can they please PM me.

868901 2010-03-21 00:24:00 It's not up to you, it's up to the parents.
And whats the point if they can't afford internet?

Be careful - stick with XP, not older versions of WIndows.

But apart from Trademe, there's Gameplanets Sell forum - usually cheaper then Trademe too. less on it but keep an eye out, there's whole PCs occasionally.

I never have spare anything, I either have to sell my old stuff straight away to supplement the new stuff or there's a waiting list of relatives and friends.........

868902 2010-03-21 00:35:00 There's now only one parent (which as I understand it has helped to stabilise the situation).

I'm hoping that they can at least afford a $10/month dial up plan.

868903 2010-03-21 01:57:00 Ask on GPforums. Pctek and I could vouch for you then. qazwsxokmijn (102)
868904 2010-03-21 03:11:00 I have an old Viewsonic 17" CRT (still goes well) you could have, but I am in Auckland. johcar (6283)
868905 2010-03-21 04:27:00 Try molten media (http://www.molten.org.nz/) and other charity computer recyclers, bound to be heaps of unused stuff around.

Good luck!!

Other trusts as well, Lions, Rotary, local groups may help.

868906 2010-03-21 09:51:00 Give molten media a wide berth. I've heard a lot of horror stories about them. They're incompetent scam artists. ubergeek85 (131)
868907 2010-03-21 23:05:00 I have two old pc boxes here which I had been planning on amalgamating into one to sell on. I'm in Auckland though.
Someone is bound to be able to help out, try some other PC forums or perhaps advertise in local paper??

868908 2010-03-22 06:33:00 Thanks for the offers of assistance and advice so far.

It's a shame the 2 most concrete offers of help come from non-Wellingtonians.

Hopefully someone will be able to come to the party ...

868909 2010-03-22 06:52:00 I have a slimline Compaq Deskpro P3 500MHz which would be ok for Win98, 17" CRT HP7500 monitor, keyboard and mouse. It has one of those slim proprietary Compaq CD ROM drives. Integrated graphics and audio, and a network card.

It's been out in the shed for a while, and I can't remember HDD size, but probably around 20GB, and RAM would be around 500MB mark.

Is this any use to you?
