868290 2010-03-18 09:08:00 After bit of research and reading various sources of information it appears the collapse of US dollar is not too far fetched after all.

Somehow i feel the apocalyptic 2012 beliefs may coincide with the economic collapse of the Western world or at least US economy setting of domino effect.

With the collapse of the US dollar and the chaos to follow in that period of time until economies stabilize and new World currency gets in place.....what items is it worth stocking up on now before the crisis ??

Non perishable food stuff comes to mind. I feel inclined to invest in Gold and silver. Sadly i cant stock up on Fuel lol

Any thoughts on what to stock up now and what else to prepare for.

868297 2010-03-18 17:43:00 I'd forget the 'precious metals' - they're only 'precious' if people have the money to buy them from you.

If the economy if down the drain, there's gonna be nobody wanting a bit-o-gold.

Rice, large stores of water (or a nearby river), crop seeds, toilet paper, basic tools, particularly gardening and home repair tools would gain the greatest value.

All of this is worthless to you if there are armed gangs marauding the neighbourhood taking whatever they need via force, so you'd then either want a hidden and secure place, or a large cohesive neighbourhood to support and protect each other. Trying to be selfish and keeping your horde of goods to yourself in a crisis may be a worse option than sharing your precious goods with a community who will then have a combined interest in its (and your) protection.

Having a gun isn't much help if there are marauding groups going from house to house - mongrels like that won't care if their members are being shot - they'll just shoot back, and they will have the most weaponry, including yours once they've killed you.
Being a sniper and knocking off the 'enemy' from quite a distance would have some appeal, but you still need to eat, poo and sleep, so you need a group to watch your back. You just can't do it alone.

And some sort of awesome fortress... Preferably something built upon a Nimitz class carrier, with a **** load of anti ballistic missiles...

868299 2010-03-18 19:39:00 I hesitate to call the $US a collapse, more a "always going to happen" re-alignment as it looses its dominate currency status. This has been predicated by many economists for decades.

Many international companies are now trading in Euro's as the preferred currency and will prob take the $US place at least for a few decades until China takes over.

The power in the world is changing to countries like China which I am not sure is a bad thing when they seem to wage war on far less people lol.

The West has relied on the e US to be our "bully" and keep control of world resources to maintain our standard of living (for what ever made up reason to make us all feel good, usually some crap about freedom or lately terrorists). The US will not be able to sustain its war efforts indefinitely however, but its far less important than it was, I believe there foreign policy is still a bit of a kick back to the cold war.

I would not believe the doom and gloom predictions, the world economies will adjust to the shift in power, it always has. The US will be fine also it just wont be "such" a dominate player.
