867919 2010-03-17 03:42:00 For years I have used the old DOS program "EZT" to record our family tree, for several reasons.
It is very simple to use and can be learned in about 20 minutes.
I could carry the entire program and details of about 5 families on one single old fashioned floppy.
So simple to use in fact that I sometimes used it to keep track of families in some book I was reading which got over complicated.

But the other day I found I could not print out a family tree.
I am quite happy with the type of family tree which is horizontal and goes from left to right as used in EZT
Using XP and a modern printer has made a difference.
So obviously I really need a new program.

But the ones I have tried in the past are over complicated - far more powerful than I need, and confusing to use.
I am not into looking up my family - just in recording what I already know about them and other families.

Has anybody experience or knowledge of a similar program to EZT so that I can switch to something more up to date, but not too complicated.

867920 2010-03-17 03:54:00 I have used Family Tree Maker for Windows, a purchased one, in the past. But now use Legacy 7 which is free to download and use. Both do have some features I won't ever use, but are really quite easy to set up with just family tree facts if that is all you want to do.

867921 2010-03-17 04:44:00 Yes, I also use the free version of Legacy and am happy with it.

The latest version is always to be paid for, the previous version is free.

867922 2010-03-17 06:08:00 My mum went from something very similar, dos based, floppy based. And when she moved off it she moved to a could based system - www.myheritage.com

You can set it up with family members and your own site etc... May not be for you but seems ok.

867923 2010-03-17 06:37:00 Genopro! I purchased it about 8 years ago and the purchase included free updates for life. I check about every 6 months and get the latest version. I found it very easy to become familiar with and it does more than everything I need. If you want to see my own online family tree as presented by Genopro, send me a PM and I'll direct you to it.
I found that you don't have to use all the features, but as I gathered more details of family (back to c1500) I began to use more of the features bit by bit.

867924 2010-03-17 10:54:00 +1 for Legacy 7 (free)

It has heaps of features I will never use, but agree that the simple basics are easily mastered.
(The website also has loads of training info for those who want to use the fancy stuff)

867925 2010-03-18 00:52:00 Thomas01, have used free Legacy recently and find the window overpowering.

Have followed PAF from the Familysearch.org website from the very first Dos version.

Up to ver. PAF5.2 and it is no longer being upgraded, but is still available on their site.

Less cluttered than most too.

Lurking.

867926 2010-03-18 00:58:00 Will EZT export your current data into Gedcom?

If so then Legacy.

867927 2010-03-18 08:07:00 Legacy seemed the obvious one to try so I downloaded it.
Seems a good program and I liked the instructional video - except that I lost it after my first session and haven't managed to find it since. I have lots of questions but then I have never used Legacy before. And it is far more complex than I really want - no hope of learning it in 20 minutes like EZT.

Perhaps I really do not need to be able to print out the family tree - after all I can always see it on screen, so could stay with EZT. In fact I feel that I ran across the problem with printing it out some years ago and found a solution.

I will be very surprised (and delighted) if Legacy can download the data from EZT
Thanks to everybody for your suggestions.
