868209 2010-03-18 05:08:00 Um I think Super 14 is possibly the only sport mainstream sport in NZ/Aus that doesnt have the areas.

Soccer - Wellington Phoenix, Sydney FC
League - Gold Coast Titans, Brisboune Broncos
Netball - Southern Steel, Northern Mystics
Cricket - Canterbury Wizards, Wellington Firebirds

And the smaller competitions usually just have the district as there name, eg South Canterbury, Mid Canterbury, North Otago.

The only sport for me is Clay Target shooting.

When super rugby started, all the franchises had their province before the name

868214 2010-03-18 07:10:00 Thanks for all your contributions, but most of you seemed to have missed the point. At least Darkstar was awake.

I was wondering why the teams only use animal names, or whatever, but do not include the name of their region or town? Are they ashamed of where they come from and so use an alias?

Would it not be a good idea to give the people, who might not be avid sports fans, a clue as to the regional identity of the team. Perhaps then you may attract some supporters who would be more interested in barracking for the Central Pulse, the Crusaders or the Sharks.

I have no idea where the Bulls, the Cheetahs or the Force come from. I might have vague interest in their sporting fortunes if they were from my region or town. But how does one tell?

Perhaps I should forget the idea and join the Michael Schumaker fans. At least it is no secret than he comes from Germany.
