| 1142612 | 2010-10-08 19:30:00 | Thanks for all the advice folks. Now this might seem like a dumb question but is it possible to put an exact copy of my primary drive onto the new one so that if the primary drive fails i can boot the Toshiba off the external drive and in effect run it from that for a while? If so how do I do it? are there any pitfalls like hidden system files that I have to watch out for? Is this where an ISO image comes in? Sorry to be a pain.... |

| 1142614 | 2010-10-08 20:54:00 | re the ISO image -- Dont confuse a ISO image with a Disk Image. In simple terms a ISO image is normally a "container" of the contents of a CD/DVD, made to a ISO standard. This is so all the "bits" are exactly how the person made it remain the same. Have a read of This here (en.wikipedia.org) - that explains it better ( scroll down to References) as well As here (en.wikipedia.org) A disk Image, is a copy of a HDD, usually in one or two "containers" (depending on the software) of a OS/ Programs or what ever. The two can be called the same, and you can also make a complete operating system, programs data into a ISO image, but usually its made into a disk Image. Confused  :) Usually when people talk about an ISO , its relating to a CD/DVD, where as a Disk Image relates to a Clone of a HDD. |

| 1142615 | 2010-10-08 21:19:00 | What OS are you running? there are several options: * Any version of Windows since XP - create a software mirror in disk management. * Windows XP - NT Backup * Windows Vista/7 - Backup and restore (Windows 7 is better as you can backup to a VHD, you can also boot off the VHD with Windows 7) * Mac OSX (since 10.5) - Time machine Or you could use a third party program to backup your PC, of which there is a vaery large amount of. |

| 1142616 | 2010-10-08 22:29:00 | Thanks guys So, Wain, is your "disc image" the same as Gary's clone? I've downloaded and installed Paragon's Backup and Recovery 2010 Free Advanced which seems t be saying that it can make an image of a whole hard drive including the OS or do I need one of these?: www.downloadsquad.com |
