The medicine man gathered 57 secret herbs, boiled them for two days and steeped a buffalo hide thong in the messy brew. After the hide thong had been carefully dried and blessed, the medicine man presented it to the ailing chief with instructions "Chief, chew one hand span of this thong each day until it is completely pulverised, then swallow to drive out the evil flux and counteract the poisons that trouble you. When the entire thong has been consumed, you will be cured." A month later, the chief summoned the medicine man once again and said " Medicine Man, bad news; the thong is ended but the malady lingers on." |
