Went to a timber yard today (in auckland) and he told me Balau and Jarrah are hard to get. HE suggested vitex and then stain it to a colour I like. Sounds like a good economic solution ?

Not as good as Huon Pine though.

Bollox - I have had a pine deck for over 25 years and it is still fine.

868602 2010-03-22 01:45:00 Mind you Kwila will also rot eventually if it remains wet. Timber merchants indicate a life span for both timbers of about 20 years, unless preservative, and fungus inhibiting treatments are applied.

They are OK if free-draining. We have extensive Kwila decking laid down more than 20 years ago and apart from one piece that has about 2cm of rot at the end (was under a pot plantand always damp) and minor erosion in some top rail joints on deck railings caused by Slater infestations, it is all sound.

I also built a pergola of untreated macrocarpa 20 years ago and it is still rot free. I have H5 tanalised pine posts that have more decay!

Cheers

I think the life of tanalised timber depends more on who treated it than the "H" grade.
