2010-03-21 16:06:00 | Yesterday was an incredible day for me that gave me an 11-hour gig! You all know the first hour or so is kinda dry and not in the groove, but after that you can really dig in and get it on. Well - yesterday was a trip to that land for me. After 40+ years of not playing for anyone but myself - the small group I'm in is starting to really jell now and we are acting as each other's eyes and ears. It's almost like one body with a lot of arms and fingers. We had a few "cold" songs at first and that's OK since like I say the first set is a warm-up anyway. But after that slow start - I felt the magic happen and we just got into the zone. I never ate or had anything to drink from that point on since I didn't want it to break the spell. Fortunately for me I am following a pair of leads and rhythms that have many years in the professional circuit in Vegas and big venues in LA and Orange County and were openers for big names. One guy's wife is supreme in vocals and keyboards. We get an occasional couple of horns (trombone/sax and trumpet) that show up, but they are on their own wavelength and don't always show for our stuff. We do a lot of Chicago (CTA) when they do appear. I played my SR500 and my Acoustic B450 and a side cab: B115 for a total of 525 watts this time and the sound was (as I say) "chocolate" - or so good it melts in your ears. From now on I'm leaving my P-bass at home as I never play it any more anyway. I'd marry that SR if it wasn't against the law or that I'm already married anyway. The second set - one big-long-uninterrupted set - had the following songs in it (plus more that we just winged and played very well from old, stored-in memories) ::: This is in our band book and we have them pretty well wired and add something new all the time. We always start out with Green Onions - Booker T & The MGs - then we usually go like this:::: The Rain Song - Led Zepplin Girl - The Beatles In My Life - The Beatles Long Train - The Doobies Samba Pa Ti - Santana Stormy Weather - BB King Stang's Theme - SRV Show 'n Tell - Al Wilson Stormy Monday - The Allman Brothers Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood - The Animals Could This Be Magic - Little Caesar & The Romans I Get Around - The Beachboys China Grove - The Doobies Harlem Nocturne - The Viscounts Something - The Beatles Pipeline - The Chantays This Boy (Ringo's Theme) - The Beatles Islands In The Stream - The Bee Gees Save The Last Dance For Me - Ben E. King White Silver Sands - Bill Black's Combo When I'm Gone - Billy Ray Cyrus She Caught The Katy - ala The Blues Brothers What You Won't Do For Love - Bobby Caldwell I Feel Like Dyiing - Gino Minilli Lowdown - Boz Skaggs My Maria - Brooks & Dunn Mercy, Mercy Mercy - The Buckinghams That'll Be The Day - Buddy Holly & The Crickets She Feels Good - Bugs Henderson Boogie Music - Canned Heat Europa - Santanna Little Red Rooster - The Stones Saturday In The Park - Chicago (if our horn guys show up - which they did) Young Blood - The Coasters I'm Yours - Jason Mraz (This is really new for us - we just added it two days ago - it works!) Expressway To Your Heart - Count Five As you can see, we really mix the music up - but we mostly try to feel what the audience wants and generally give them their choice every other song with what we want in between. We filled a lot of time with unrehearsed stuff that went pretty good. I think we did our book about three times! After the first eleven hours, we played some after-stuff to get some new music into our book and we might add "Sledgehammer - Peter Gabrial" and "Ain't Gonna Give Up On Love - SRV" Of course - none of this is a paid gig. We got free eats and these were our friends. About 90 friends not counting the players and everybody had a great time. BBQs are a lot of fun.

Better than Windex.(R) |

2010-03-21 19:55:00 | Windex? Huh? The Vegemite will create a mad dash for the head (loo) I'm afraid and have you ever seen six musicians all lined up for the same seat - at the same time?

2010-03-21 20:27:00 | Windex - - Did you never see "My big fat Greek wedding? With the optimum dosage of Vegemite you will have no need to dash for the heads (bog) - long range is a speciality.

2010-03-21 23:35:00 | If you can't use Vegemite then you could try the alternative Marmite, just as black just as oddly flavoured makes great insect repellent and or sunblock. It bypasses the Lynx effect and helps users of Lucas to see the light | gary67 (56) | |
2010-03-22 03:31:00 | But seriously - do people really eat Marmite or Vegimite or is this some great big NZ national joke on the rest of the world? | SurferJoe46 (51) | |
