867690 2010-03-16 21:25:00 Just when I need to print off loads of stuff for a customer today, the printer decided to let all it's smoke out.

Burnt the paper too.

Sigh.

Not easy to find a printer that
A)Does more than 800pages a cartridge
B)Has a 64bit driver
C)Doesn't cost a fortune

There goes this months profits.......

867693 2010-03-16 22:11:00 Sorry to hear of your loss. I guess you professionals never bother with trivial everyday faults on your own gear?
Sounds like a bit of overkill really, I prefer "out of paper", or for a bit of drama, the plug can fall out.
(When a printer really sucks a kumara, I hope it has near-empty cartridges.)

Perhaps a used HP laser??. Have seen LJ5's etc sell for $10.

867695 2010-03-16 23:47:00 What sort of printer was it ?

Lasers the way to go these days - We haven't got any inkjets connected in the whole place now. We have one Black and One color - the black gets used daily.

On the Black - page count = 8995 on the third toner now ( since New) which is showing 40% left.

Average toner lasts 7 + reams (3500 + Pages) While the initial outlay may be higher than a inkjet, over all they are a lot cheaper to run.

Edited: depending on amount of print on / per page.

And you can do things like this (spritesmods.com) to them.

867697 2010-03-16 23:58:00 It was an HP K5300. Used when bought. That will teach me. Second hand rubbish.

No pics, the smoke dissipated - just a lingering burnt wiring type smell in here now, scorch marks on the paper weren't that exciting.

It was a matter of high pages per ink, 64bit drivers and not too expensive.

Yes I looked at Lasers - but same thing. Toners etc vary too, low pages, high pages etc.

I get sick of looking up the specs and prices and then the pages etc...

Bought an Officejet 6000, not a bad price, 1400pages, 64bit drivers. And it was $10 cheaper from Digital Shop than from my main printer supplier.....typical.

And no, don't you know we techs are not supposed to have failures with our own equipment? How dare it.
Our stuff is supposed to work perfectly forever or until we upgrade.;)

867699 2010-03-17 00:18:00 Ive often wondered what to look for in a good printer... or a scanner printer combo....
are there basic guidelines to follow when purchasing?
