1453823 2018-09-26 18:07:00 Can I run Win XP-P on a VM and is it volatile or actually installed and won't go away if I close and restart my 'puter?

I bet I'm asking for trouble here - but I would like to experiment with this idea .

I'll do this on another 'puter which was running XP very nicely until M$ ceased support for my hardware in their coerced 8 . 0 'update' .

1453824 2018-09-27 00:16:00 Yep you certainly can, simply install a VM Program to start with on your Linux OS, suggest either VMWare or Virtual Box (both have their advantages and disadvantages - select which ever you feel happy with) Then load in XP in the Virtual Machine.

The XP VM will be completely separate from your Linux, its like having another OS on the same PC. To remove it its simply a case of turning it off (in the player) deleting the entry, then delete the VM Machine in the folder you created.

What will happen is when you install the VM program and make a VM, it will create a VM network adapter, so while its doing this you will lose internet connection for a few moments. What's "fun" is when the internet doesn't work and you have to play around with the VM settings. Usually its only a simple wrong setting someplace, but theres plenty of help available on how to sort those sorts of problems :)

One thing you HAVE to be sure of is if the HOST Computer is VM capable. Some older machines don't have the option in the BIOS.

Heres some players. vmware_workstation_player/15_0 (my.vmware.com)

OR

Virtual Box/ Linux_Downloads (www.virtualbox.org)

Also found this older video on installing Virtual box, don't know how upto date it is, maybe one of the Linux "experts" can advise. www.youtube.com

1453825 2018-09-27 00:32:00 Can I have it installed and deny it internet access?

I have all the Service Packs too.

I have all the Service Packs too . Yep, several ways, either in the OS or in the VM settings, simply give it a static IP that doesn't exist is one way . :)

1453827 2018-09-27 02:08:00 Gotcha!

I've got all my Google-stuff synched, so I'll not lose anything. All my photos have been sent to 'The Cloud" so I feel they are safe too.

I just won't allow M$ to have access to my external hdd, as that's where I have my big video and MP3 files.

I'm going to begin a RaspberryPi class in a couple of weeks, and I thought that downloading a newer distro for it would be best done on VM.

I am only finding 32-bit versions and I need 64-bit .

Do I have to reboot to delete and re-install a different version?

At this point, I get an error message that says I've destroyed some process-or-other . I took a screenshot of the error - so far it has eluded me!

Still searching . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

1453830 2018-09-27 03:47:00 Do I have to reboot to make this work? The first time, VirtualBox was in my Applications area, but not now.

I thought I removed it from Mint, it had a removal tool that I used. There may be some remnants of it somewhere --- the key word here is "somewhere".

1453831 2018-09-27 05:42:00 Virtual box does come in X64 www.virtualbox.org

As I mentioned earlier on though, make sure the Hardware can support it ( this has nothing to do with the OS)
You need a 64-bit processor with hardware virtualization support

If Hardware virtualization is enabled in the BIOS. (Your CPU must support it.)

For Intel x64: VT-x (Intel Virtualization Technology) and VT-d are both enabled
For AMD x64: AMD SVM (Secure Virtual Machine) is enabled

XP ( The VM) more than likely will be X86 (32bit) but that doesn't matter.

Sorry - Cant help if Linux screws up and wont uninstall something, you'll need the correct advise from the Linux "Experts" who know what to do. ;)

Do I have to reboot to make this work? Shouldn't do, Well I know you don't have to on a Windows machine, so Linux shouldn't have to, but shouldn't hurt to try.
