Well done Joe, I wondered if anyone would recognise it?

1456211 2018-12-10 23:22:00 I always recognize Brit quality .

This is said by someone who was THE Peugeot mechanic in all of Orange County, California for years .

Nobody would even open the hoods of them, but as I got familiar with the engine and the free-standing cylinders and the tools I made to rebuild them, I had more work on them than anyone could nightmare about or over or . . . . whatever (trying to NOT end a sentence with a preposition) .

I was the Jaguars that made me a lot of money too - after I built a special saw to cut through the Londonderry Fog they used for aluminum on the heads .

9241

The studs from the block went through the head and appeared above the upper head surface where a nice shiny chrome double-heavy washer was held down by a castellated acorn nut - also chromed .

Above (^) this head removal technique doesn't help much - that hydraulic jack will just bend the head and then it needs to be heated and drawn to a flat plate and then resurfaced if the cam journals aren't out of alignment and the head is ruined! This is a very bad technique!

Problem was that the cake-frosting aluminum would 'flow' and fill in all around the studs and when you tried to remove the head, all that soft aluminum would not yield and the head would NOT come off .

I suspended the whole car once over a long weekend by welding large rings to a couple of spark plug shells and using a chainfall from the cherry picker, just closed the doors and when I came back on the next Tuesday, it was still hanging .

I made a tube to fit along the stud and welded a set of hole saw teeth to the bottom and a 3/8" drive socket on the other .

It would cut, passing down along the shaft of the stud and re-open the clearances just enough to finally get room to pull the head off .

Every time I did that for another shop or walk-in customer, I charged $500 . 00 for the job . Where else could they go? I had the answer to their problem .

Ah-h-h ---> those were the days when I was smart! (er)

1456212 2018-12-10 23:50:00 Well, we in upside-down land didn’t persevere with the XJ6 Motor. ;)

We just biffed it and installed a Chev 365 and then had a nice car.

Someone made a quid out of supplying the conversion kit I guess. :)

Yup. My experience with an XJ6 was abysmal. I bought a brand new XJ6C in 1974. Under 1,000 miles on the clock on a dead smooth road (I-10 LA to Palm Springs), the radiator drain opened of its own accord, coolant drained, and I only just caught it just in time to prevent the engine cooking totally. Jaguar didn't want to know, they had done their bit and sold the heap of s*** through the Ford Dealership network. Ford didn't want to know because it wasn't a Ford, and they only sold it on behalf. Caveat emptor. Long story short I ditched it at only <15,000 miles and got me a 76 Oldsmobile Toronado coupe. Lovely car, albeit a GM yank tank.
