1143858 2010-10-12 00:54:00 Have an NEC PowerMate DL Series with Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
error on boot Missing or corrupt c:\windows\system32\config\system
do not have the os cd
can I use a Windows XP Home cd to do the repair?

by note: it most likely is infected thus the problem

1143859 2010-10-12 01:17:00 Best not if you want the additional stuff MC has in it.
Just get hold of a MC CD.

1143860 2010-10-12 01:18:00 If we dont use the extra MC stuff - would it be ok? NZHawk (4093)
1143861 2010-10-12 02:27:00 I wouldn't reccomend for a repair - but for a reinstall it should be alright. SoniKalien (792)
1143862 2010-10-12 02:29:00 But on a reinstall the Windows Media code wont work for XP Home will it? NZHawk (4093)
1143863 2010-10-12 02:38:00 Nope, code wont work on XP Home, you will need a OEM Media Center CD. wainuitech (129)
1143864 2010-10-12 02:41:00 Ok thank you NZHawk (4093)
1143865 2010-10-12 02:46:00 XP MCE is actually based on XP Pro from memory so you would need an XP Pro disc to do the repair.
But as others have said it probably won't work anyway as MCE has extra bits and other bits removed.

1143866 2010-10-12 03:04:00 Press F11 to access the recovery partition and follow on-screen instructions to restore your system - provided you've not reformatted the recovery partition. bk T (215)
1143867 2010-10-12 03:04:00 Seen that many times.
Probable corrupt registry.
Is fixable with backup registry, but you really need to know your way around a PC.
Also a chance the HD is faulty (not allways with that error)-but as you said virus, virus's can also cause reg corruption (usually not)

Possibly fixable with system restore, IF you can get it to run.
