1143339 2010-10-10 20:54:00 Hi

Last night I used Paragon's Backup and Recovery 2010 Free Advanced to back up/image my primary HD to a WD 1Tb External hard drive for the first time. “My Computer” > Properties told me that 172 Gb was used. Paragon told me it was going to backup 298Gb of data into 142.7 gb (the resulting file was about 155 Gb). It took 3 hours and 8 mins to do this.

I want to know if this is about the right sort of time.

The laptop was advertised with the following specs:

Toshiba Satellite A300/V01 Notebook
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 (2.4GHz) 1066
RAM: 2GB + 2GB DDR2 (800MHz) (Total 4GB)
HDD: 320GB + 320GB SATA (5400rpm) (Total 640GB)
Display: 15.4" WX 200 CSV
Optical: DVD-SuperMulti (DL) 12.7mm
Graphics: ATI M86 Graphics Card with 512MB Dedicated Graphics Memory
Bluetooth: BT V2.1 + EDR
Wireless: WLAN (Intel 802.11a⁄g⁄n)
Networking: 1Gbps LAN
Webcam: 1.3 Megapixel
I⁄O: TV-Out, HDMI-CEC, FM Tuner, Expresscard, Microphone, Bridge Media Slot
Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
Warranty: 1 Year

and I'm using Vista Home Premium SP 2

Thanks

1143340 2010-10-10 21:12:00 Yes. pctek (84)
1143341 2010-10-10 23:18:00 Times about right, but Personally I wouldn't use the Paragon Backup and Recovery - Seen it fail to many times.

Just ask gary67 ;) Example:post #4 (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz)

1143342 2010-10-10 23:22:00 Thanks guys

What's your recommended Free alternative to Paragon Wain?
tuiruru (12277)
1143343 2010-10-10 23:32:00 Free ones, Hmmmmmmmmmm Personally I have had no consistent luck with the free ones.

In the link I put previously (I altered the post) I use active@disk Image - its not free, BUT never had a failure yet, and I re-image back one of my workshop PC's weekly over the LAN, sometimes more. ( that's because they get screwed by customers drives, or I'm experimenting with something) Takes about 15 / 20 minutes to put back a base copy of W7 with a couple of apps.

I actually posted This Video (www.youtube.com) for gary at the time showing how to image back over a LAN.

Doing it to a removable USB drive is actually easier - The demo version works for 10 days ( I think), so I spose if you wanted, you could use that to make an image, then get another demo if you want to put it back ;)

1143344 2010-10-11 01:59:00 First of all, Paragon removes the activation which means you have to reactivate after restoration. Use Acronis Echo.

Second, our system partition should not be larger than say 60gig. Split the rest up into 2 sequential partitions for your data etc, This make backing up the system much faster. Your data will be safe in the event of a system crash. Back up the Data by Folders (also in Acronis)

1143345 2010-10-11 02:20:00 Bugger!!!
Have followed the link you posted Wain....
And there was me thinking it was all so simple and I had it cracked!!

Hmm..... some careful thinking required.

Thanks

PS I have started having my suspicions about Paragon. This morning I decided to get it to check last night's archive integrity but evantually had to abort that when after 40 min it told me it was going to take another 15 or so hours to finish and that time was still ticking up.
The timing on the original archiving was a bit funny too - it Crawled to about 60% and then got thru' the remaoning 40% relatively quickly. How do you check if a restore is going to work without wiping out the original hard drive?

Got any thoughts on Macrium Reflect Free, Comodo Backup free (which I have used but doesn't seem to offer differential backups) or Easus backup free which I used briefly a while back?

1143346 2010-10-11 02:37:00 I forgot to ask...

Mzee - do you mean the Windows activation? How do you get it back?
tuiruru (12277)
1143347 2010-10-11 03:08:00 I have tried a couple of the ones you mentioned "Macrium Reflect Free & Easus backup free"

But to quote myself :)

Personally I have had no consistent luck with the free ones. I'd rather pay for something that so far I have 100% faith in than risk it. Not one single failure yet.

1143348 2010-10-11 03:51:00 Must admit Wain, I'm heading in that direction (actually paying!)

Going back to my previous post (and this may seem like a stupid question) How do you check if a restore is going to work without wiping out the original hard drive?
