870096 2010-03-26 10:52:00 Aaaarrrggghhhh!!! My wonderful 14yr son, having enjoyed his PS2 for the past year or so now wants to buy a Play-station 3.

As far as I can tell, PS2 games won't play on a PS3. Selling the PS2 plus existing games might on a very good day raise $150. But then, his sisters enjoy a couple of those so it will probably go in the cupboard instead.....

Over and above all of that, my lad proposes spending his total life savings to get the new console. I despair.

So advice please - what is the best platform? X-box, Wii, PS3 etc......??

870097 2010-03-26 11:08:00 Next week's offering for 14 yo is always alluring. Whatever you get, next month's release will trump it (in young eyes). The whole thing is a plot aimed squarely at parents. ;) R2x1 (4628)

Hiya Winston! How are you now? Recovering well?

You need to ask your son - if he wants a PS3 it's because he prefers PS games and so on. And not a Wii, Wii is for retirement homes.

870100 2010-03-26 19:14:00 Having all 3, I can safely say I prefer the xbox360, much more comfortable controllers (IMHO) and cross platform games are generally developed with the 360 as the lead platform so run better on it than the PS3.

However as pctek quite rightly points out it is all down to what games your son wants, if they happen to be playstation exclusives then he certainly won't thank you for an xbox360 :p.

The other consideration would be if he wants to play online, the 360 online service is not free (~$100 a year) whereas the ps3 online service is. However the 360 online service is generally considered superior and a more hassle-free experience. But the major driving factor for ths area will be if he has any friends that he wants to play online with, he will need to have the same console as his friends.

870101 2010-03-26 20:11:00 Don't the "old" (ie not the new slimline ones) PS3's support PS2 games? Maybe you could dip your toes into the PS3 world by getting a second-hand PS3. MushHead (10626)
870102 2010-03-26 20:14:00 Simple, Let him pick, If he wants the PS3 then that's what will make him happy.

Personally I'd get the xbox, But I'm sure your boy doesn't care in the slightest what I think.Lmao.

Either way you can't go wrong, Both are pretty damn fine.

870103 2010-03-26 20:26:00 If you have a powerful computer, you could always give pcsx2 (http://pcsx2.net/) a try to look after the old PS2 games.

Personally I'd go for an old fat PS3. Some models can run PS2/PS1 games, and you can install Linux on 'em too.

870104 2010-03-27 06:13:00 Thanks for the input everyone. I'll have a quiet talk to him but let him make his own decision. He's a pretty good lad and understands that mum and dad are old and boring but mean the best. :D Winston001 (3612)
