If business's are looking to hire people then they are looking for experienced people who have been in the job and know what they are doing instead of hiring somebody who has no idea what to do . I think it was mentioned that there are some compatibility check, ie . , you won't just go and pick up rubbish and it's about a genuine effort to look for work, if no jobs, then no sweat . |

LOL The Govt has consistently stated that those who are looking to the best of their ability and those who have disabled etc children will not have their benefits cut. The are 100's of solo parents with children who work and are not on the benefit and are coping working 9 to3 plus working for families etc. There is and always will be assistance for those who do their bit and still need a small hand up. |

Already this practise has given us a world-leading gas-to-gasoline industry, leaky buildings, and soon a Super City . (Marsden B should be in there somewhere too . ) Parliament is unable to hold all these unfortunate creatures, so it is time to move out into Heartland New Zealand and show that Government Policy is a living, vibrant force for good . Major work schemes will clear fell the National Parks so that when they are turned into open cast rock mines there will not be any nuisance fauna and/or flora to cause protests . A 10 lane cycle way can be made the length of the country to ensure that when the Cabinet says "On your bikes" the new work force can be re-deployed at a moments notice . The Central Plateau Desert Area is to be gradually expanded so the Army can deploy Brigades of conscripts to decimate the now enhanced Kaimanawa Horse Flock . (Can't have flocking horses running rough-shod all over the place . ) Taupo will be the new Super Port since experts have determined that it has a very minimal tidal variation, no nasty salt-water corrosion problems, and it is largely a downhill ride for the logistic teams to take the imported goods on huge wagons drawn by large Lycra clad teams going along the new network of cycle-ways . A major employment centre will be formed in Milford Sound doing all cycle repairs and maintenance for the entire country . Carrying bicycles to Milford will provide healthy exercise for every puncture afflicted cyclist and give them motivation to be more careful in future . As a further major benefit of the cycleways, our medical expenditure should be drastically cut as the pre-admission requirement of peddling and paddling to the new Central Peasant Health Center and Umu facility at the Chathams will ensure we are not wasting health resources on sick people who are notorious slackers and parasites . A new sliding scale of taxation will assist in instilling the necessary work ethic in the peasants; the first thousand dollars of weekly income will be taxed at a flat 50%, the second thousand at 25%, the third at 12 . 5%, the 4th at 6 . 25% and so on . This is only fair, as top people shouldn't be unfairly diverted by non-productive worrying about taxes . Peasants on the other hand have far too much idle time, and a bit of healthy worrying will help ensure we have a lean and fit work force . The North and South Islands are to be joined by canal, due to most excavation on the planned route being already completed . |

Though some solo parents may be in a much better position to be employable, as they may have past work experience, tertiary qualifications, relevant references, community involvement, etc. I mean a solo parent ex marketing manager will likely always find work - even at home with the kids. But clearly their must be some (perhaps young, uneducated or foreigners with English as 2nd language) that have no NZ work related experience, qualifications, etc - hence difficult to find (or ever be offered) work... |

But clearly their must be some (perhaps young, uneducated or foreigners with English as 2nd language) that have no NZ work related experience, qualifications, etc - hence difficult to find (or ever be offered) work... I think the important bit is the "effort" to look for work or to get more training. I don't think it is about forcing people into work that they cannot do or are unqualified for. I've heard that WINZ has a loan thing that someone can start up their own businesses. For those who cannot understand English there may be avenues in their own communities - while limited, it is the "effort" a person puts into it. If a person tries and cannot get a job I would think they keep their entitlements as I understand. They also have courses available incl English. While it may not help the person greatly, it should benefit them in their daily lives and general morale, ie., meeting up with other people. Re: a parent. It's no different than a international person who is claiming an individual person's dole. They may need to look for work or undergo training or attend language courses. |

| 869320 | 2010-03-23 22:07:00 | Trev: I remember many years ago people saying that new technology will cause unemployment. Say for example years ago a machine that took say 20 people to operate it now requires one who sits in a air conditioned office with 2 or 3 LCD screens in front of them and a couple of keyboards etc. No one can have an argument with adopting new technologies and processses to make business more cost effective and competitive, and people so displaced are casualties of progress. However, these casualties can be assisted by properly structured re-training and placement programmes, which is preferable to them being shown the door, with an redundancy payment. My objection is the exporting of jobs to third world, low labour cost, countries with the purpose of maximising profit and to hell with the social cost. Its' not as if the imported goods are measurably cheaper, the consumer pays just as much as he did for NZ goods, and additionally as a taxpayer carries the burden of providing a safety net for the displaced workers. All too frquently, the imported goods are of significantly lower quality and durability so the consumer looses both ways. Example ; Fasteners made from inferior grade steels - Bolts sheeing like a stick of carrot without any significant torque being applied. What is needed is an impetus to buy New Zealand, to start making goods in NZ again, not to keep on flooding the market with more Cheap Crap from China. |
