1143389 2010-10-13 21:40:00 If you get the downlaod from Active@ the one I pictured before, (123MB) that contains the Boot Disk Demo as well as the program.

if you purchase the software, thats the one you will get a download link for.

To answer the question before, yes you can make a backup from teh bootable CD, even the demo.

I was going to post a quick video on how to do it exactly, bloody cams battery ran out :crying.

Maybe later if you want to see it. ?

1143390 2010-10-13 21:50:00 Thanks Wain

Yep a vid would be helpful

What about the chkdsk thing? Wot's the correct synatax? Seems to me there's not a lot of point making an image if the OS is a bit corrupted.

In the meantime will download the 123meg file.

1143391 2010-10-13 22:57:00 chkdsk in Vista or W7 click start, type in CMD in the search results, RIGHT click cmd.exe / run as administrator -- you have to run as admin other wise it wont work.

In the Command prompt window chkdsk /r <press Enter>

1143392 2010-10-16 01:14:00 Well, success of sorts :clap

Downloaded the 123Mb file from the site and installed it. Created a boot CD and booted the lappy from that. Created an image of C: on the WD Elements 1tb external drive with “Normal” compression. Windows “Computer” shows C: to be 288Gb with 115Gb free. Active@ DiskImage said it was looking at 180.6Gb to Image (it compressed down to 149Gb in the Elements) and took 2hrs 37mins and 22 secs to do it, which I was a bit disappointed with considering Snork's time, bust I guess our machine specs are different and the USB connection would be slowing the transfer rate – would that be right. I've yet to verify the image – I'm assuming it will take longer. :sleep

BUGGER ME!! For some reason I decided to click on Active@ DiskImage in the start menu and the whole thing's started up!!! :bananaSo, maybe the install from the big file has sorted things out. Hmmm...what sort of power setting would be the default I'd get from booting from the CD? Would booting into Vista normally and creating an image with the”High Performance” power option selected speed things up?

Anyway, people, thanks for all your input, especially you Wainui – you've been really patient as usual! Just a couple more (quick) questions:
1)When I make the next boot CD I'll get the options to put extra files etc on it. What do you recommend?
2)It says you can use a USB to boot from – does that mean the USB can only be used for that? Eg can I arrange things so that If I have to do a recovery I can do it from the external drive?

Just by the by.... you remember the error message
www.imagef1.net.nz

Well, I went back into safe mode, right clicked on F: and got this pop up box Attached file: ceedo.png (www.imagef1.net.nz) (9 KB)

which lead me to query what Ceedo was. That led me to here (www.file.net). I've checked for AutoDetect.exe and also the registry – I don't have any of those keys so I don't know what's going on there.

Anyway, at the moment I'm one happy chappy!! :punk

Thanks again and enjoy the rest of a sunny Saturday before the crap weather hits tomorrow.

1. If its only being used for a backup, I wouldn't bother adding anything.
2. Never tried it, But I assume its booting the program from a USB drive instead of a CD.
For example lets say a laptop /netbook that doesn't have an Optical drive, so USB drive is an option instead.

You "may" be able to put a image on the same USB drive, if its large enough, so everything is on the one drive, other wise if you boot from a USB drive, it should see another USB or Network drive exactly the same as if booting from a CD.

Sorry I never got around to doing that video, camera's battery is flat, and to busy earning $$. (or trying to any way) :D

1143394 2010-10-16 06:56:00 Bear in mind also that a Clone is different to an Image Tuiruru.

A cloned drive if Internal has the same properties of the original and if the original drive was bootable then so will the clone. The Clone may need drive letters assigned as well to be booted. Hence time variations and I guess system specs may make a difference but I have no real way of testing so can't comment on that.

1143395 2010-10-16 07:18:00 Thanks guys

Now, I'm confused again

So,

I chose the "Disc to Image" option. Does that mean that if the hard drive does down and gets replaced , and then I use the "Image to Disc" onto the new one, that I'll then be able to boot off the new drive and everything will be as it was?

By the way, the time taken to verify the image was 1:17:27.

1143396 2010-10-16 08:46:00 A disc image can only be restored by using the boot CD to put the image back onto a new hard drive where as a clone copies one hard drive to another exactly without making it an image to be stored, hope that makes sense gary67 (56)
1143397 2010-10-17 21:08:00 Sorry about the delay in replying Gary. Thanks for that  tuiruru (12277)
