Interesting that the first to moan are the Greens:
""Being on a benefit is not some luxury holiday. It means trying to live off as little as $161 per week. It's incredibly hard to make ends meet on such a small amount," Ms Turei said."

True for many. but not the bludging minority, at whom this is aimed (I hope)

869253 2010-03-23 02:18:00 Well at least they are trying to get the country back on track after the previous government had practically reduced us to a 3rd world country.

Too true they wrecked the place.
I could handle people getting the dole if they didnt spend it on piss, ciggies and fast food.

869254 2010-03-23 02:26:00 Exceptions for "cultural reasons"? Wouldn't be surprised.

Have you any idea where National are going to find the jobs for these people to go and do?

And don't tell me a cycleway is going to help much in that regard. Companies are going off-shore in droves.

869255 2010-03-23 02:32:00 No idea. I'm not paid $300,000 a year plus free travel for me and my family forever, to work it out. Peterj116 (6762)

Absolutely. Blame the other government for the crap economy.

They are no different.

Bludgers will always exist. So lump all beneficiaries in with them. Amazing how so many people think all of them are having a great time, rolling in money, sitting around at the pub or such.

Crap.

And single parents with 6 year olds should work too? WHo pays the childcare? Oh of course, they pay it out of their huge wages.

And what jobs? I still can't get one.
Last time I looked, 7500 people were applying for 250 crappy jobs at the new Countdown.

Idiots with no direct experience of having to scrape in every last cent should shut up and count themselves lucky they are not in this situation.
Yet.

869257 2010-03-23 02:39:00 You don't need to answer if you don't want to Speedy but what is your reason.
You seem very capable and intelligent.

Due to the drugs (prescription drugs), I used to take, their side effects (unfortunately - even tho I no longer take any, but dont regret going off them, for my health / memory loss because of them), kind of made me withdrawn / wary of what, or who's around me. Since I decided to stop taking them myself, I can remember everything (before I couldnt remember anything for more than 5 mins)

I've got whats called social phobia. Not something, I like. I can't handle / deal with crowds. Even tho, I did work for 15-16 yrs in 2 govt dept's. I couldnt go to meetings, because of this. Which includes going to things like interviews. If I get too tensed up, I can hyperventilate

869259 2010-03-23 02:46:00 As with any political announcement aimed at reducing expenditure, there are benefits (excuse the pun) and disadvantages. The benefits in this case are both financial (to the country) and to the presumed psychological well being of the individual if they are in that group who could be described as "bludgers". I say psychological well being because if the effect of having their dream ended becomes a reality it can only do them good as well as proving a positive outcome for the country. The disadvantage of this announcement, and one alluded to by Sweep is where are all the jobs that these folk are going to transition to? By making such an announcement at a time when jobs are just not around in the numbers that are required, it may well have the effect of increasing the stress on a group of people who may genuinely be classed as sickness beneficiaries and who, like some of those on unemployment benefits, would dearly like a job but can't procure one. I also note that the amount that some beneficiaries can earn before having their earnings affect their benefit will increase from $80 to $100. Nothing has been mentioned (as far as I am aware in the press release) of this also being applied to other groups of beneficiaries eg. a woman on a Widows Benefit. If not, this this is a further illustration of an announcement such as this, not taking into account the the broader effect on all groups of people on a benefit. smurf (6545)

Tell me about it . I've only got a first in first served on call job at Eden Park + Mt Smart for a pittance . (But the game makes up for it . Esp when NZ wins )

869261 2010-03-23 03:09:00 You forget that even though the Govt may be supplying them with $161 a week, there's still other ways & means of incoming, topping that up ... Oh what I wouldn't give for $161 a week right now! Chilling_Silence (9)
