869971 2010-03-25 22:41:00 Old HP NC6000 laptop out of warranty wasnt booting. No power even when ac adapter plugged in. Tech shop wanted $300+ to fix, so had a go myself.
Stripped the unit totally, removed mobo, found power plug socket solder fracture on underside and repaired, test okay, reassembled and surprised myself when it started up!

LOL..:clap

Wicked!

You should of seen the funny magnifying headset I was wearing to see the little screws etc!

869975 2010-03-25 23:43:00 Yea, see those broken power sockets all the time on laptops.
Been able to fix a few but my soldering skills aren't the best especially with a crap soldering iron!
What I normally do is strip them down and take out the mainboard and take to a mate who repairs TVs, stereos etc all day every day and get him to do the soldering.
Then I put it back together again.
Did you have any screws left over after putting it back together??!! Hate it when that happens. :D

869977 2010-03-26 04:22:00 I was about to say that you are lucky:D.

It's not any easy task especially there isn't any service manual available. Seems that every Make and Model is different.

Wonder why there isn't any standard layout like desktops which have a pretty standard 'format' ?

869978 2010-03-26 09:19:00 I get quite a few of those. It's surprising how high the success rate is even with mediocre soldering equipment. Very tricky though sometimes. Some models are worse than others - if it needs to be replaced, always the hard part is getting the old one out!

SolMeister, I'd suggest before you give up that you check the resistance of the connection you fixed with a multimeter - it should be <1 ohm. Any more, and the join has gone bad again, and you might be luckier second time round!

869979 2010-03-26 10:05:00 just some ticking sound if it were a Bomb You better slowly -- NO Quickly run - when the ticking stops

Didn't cut the red wire did ya! :D

869980 2010-03-26 10:09:00 DON'T TURN THE POWER OFF !

Seems like you've found out what makes it tick, now you don't want to be ticked off
