869601 2010-03-24 02:16:00 I love the line,I can't fly but me pigeons can........

The King of Rome

In the west end of Derby lives a working man
He says, "I can't fly but me pigeons can.
And when I set them free, it's just like part of me
Gets lifted up on shining wings".

Charlie 'udson's pigeon loft was down the yard
Of a rented house in Brook Street, where life was hard.
But Charlie had a dream and in 1913,
Charlie bred a pigeon that made his dream come true.

There was a champion's race from Italy;
We got out the maps, all that land and sea.
"Charlie you'll lose that bird" - but Charlie never heard
He put it in a basket, and sent it off to Rome.

On the day of the race a storm blew in.
A thousand birds were swept away and never seen again.
"Charlie we told you so, surely by now you know,
When you're living in the west end, there aint many dreams come true"

"Yeah, I know, but I had to try.
For I can crawl around or I can learn to fly.
And when you live round here, the ground seems awful near.
Sometimes I need a lift from victory"

Was out with my mates for a pint or two
When I saw a wing flash up in the blue.
"Charlie it's the King of Rome, come back to his west end home.
Come out here quick, he's perched up on your roof"

"Come on down, your majesty.
I knew you'd make it home to me.
Come on down my lovely one.
You made my dream come true"

In the west end of Derby lives a working man.
He says, "I can't fly but me pigeons can.
And when I set them free, it's just like part of me
Gets lifted up on shining wings"

I see this song as being about faith that whatever the circumstances, dreams can be realised. A self belief which raises itself above others' doubts. And a desire to soar, to realise potential - to "fly" rather than to "crawl around". Next step I guess is for Charlie to fly himself, to see his own "majesty".
There is a lovely version of this sung by June Tabor.

Just so Richard,I as a rule am not a folk music person, but the sentiments of the bloke who had nowt but his pigeons is rather well put in the song.

Old Terry won't appreciate the story, coming from Birmingham.

Pink Floyd - Learning To Fly

Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my sense is real,
A fatal attraction holding me fast, how
Can I escape this irresistible grasp?
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted Just an earth-bound misfit, I
Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything
No navigator to find my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone
A soul in tension that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I
Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night
There's no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, A state of bliss
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

Faith and self belief are extremely important.

Love the poem.

As nobody is looking at this post,I will admit Ros,that it brings a tear to my eye every time,so sad that all he has to look forward to is his bleedin pigeons and the song says it so poignantly.
