Much like the seat belt law but then if you can't release the seat belt when the car is trying to be a pretend submarine you may just drown.

The difference between that scenario and the helmet one is that the seatbelt one described above would occur with far less regularity.

How many road accident deaths in the last ten years can be attributed to the correct wearing of seatbelts in a car with a current WOF where the seatbelt could not be released (by the wearer or would-be rescuer)? (Answer: less than none)

How many road accident deaths for cyclists in the last ten years can be attributed to the correct wearing of a Standards Approved helmet, despite the wearing of said helmet? (Answer: none)

However neither items are a major inconvenience to the users, and both have been proven to save lives.

Apologies for the use of Department of Statistics-approved jargon ("less than none" and "none") - they are of course guesses. But I would be surprised if the real numbers reflected something different.

It is common sense to take reasonable precautions (and there is nothing unreasonable about either of the two items mentioned above) - it's a sad reflection on society when common sense has to be legislated.

If someone has no respect for his/her/its life (and the impact on friends and family in the event of his/her/its death or incapacitation), why should anyone else have any respect for it???

There have been 8 deaths in the last decade attributed to the seat belt, and 14 others where the seat belt was a contributing factor.

870780 2010-03-30 10:30:00 I heard on the TV just the other day that we kill on average 400 people a year on our roads, and that amazingly the hundreds of thousands spent on creative ads about our driving has no effect.

Obviously the answer would be to raise our taxes and double the budget for the ads.

Apologies if I'm reading this wrong, but shouldn't that be more than none?

870782 2010-03-30 10:41:00 It's the same in every country around the world. It doesn't matter what is done, people still die on the road, at pretty much the same annual rate they have for the last 15-20 years.

What amazes me is that the NZ Police always seem surprised when there are large numbers of deaths on a long weekend when the weather is crap, like they're surprised the weather could have had any bearing on the accident/death rate.

And they're always 'pleased' following a long weekend of fine weather when the accident/death rate is low, complimenting drivers on their good driving.

Total bullshit. People drive like they drive, irrespective of the weather.

Trouble is, in bad weather, a vehicle's adhesion to the road suffers (and I am constantly disappointed by the number of cars I see in carparks with little or no tread!) and so the likelihood of introducing oneself to a tree or power pole or an oncoming vehicle increases exponentially.

Less than none = less than zero = a negative number....

[EDIT]Which is illogical I suppose, given the circumstances...
