| 871485 | 2010-04-01 21:40:00 | Good on you for your interpretation Joe. I studied English linguistics at university. But sadly it hasn't helped my typing ability! | Greg (193) | ||
| 871486 | 2010-04-02 02:58:00 | I actually studied Middle Englifh. (For those who don't know, the "f" is a Gaelic/Germanic "s") Chaucer (The Canterbury Tales, etc...) and Shakespeare and some Leon Uris (Mila 18 his best by far!) and Gilbert Keith Chesterton (Father Brown) for a change-up. I still think Bill Shakey was a guild though. |

Don't think you are up to deciding if Bill is or isn't a guild, for all that . |

| 871488 | 2010-04-02 05:46:00 | . . . . . . . . . . . because "endevor" is spelled incorrectly and (sic) is appended to the word . That shows that the person quoting the text knows that the misspelled or inappropriate word is there in the original text, yet they don't correct it for the sake of authenticity . My bad . I thought that was how you guys spelt endeavour . I can't keep up with all the vowels you drop to make your very own retarded version of the English language . |

| 871489 | 2010-04-02 23:55:00 | I wonder if Mary (who else?) would help me . OR I wonder if someone (ie: Mary) would like to help me? [/INDENT] See the diff? There is no difference in the question . Your example firstly nominates Mary (who else? - it's gotta be) . But then because of of an incorrect usage of "id est" (abbreviated to i . e . - "that is" - again, it's gotta be) your second example asks the same question . But you are right on with placing of the question mark . |

| 871491 | 2010-04-03 00:25:00 | Or perhaps e.g. was meant rather than i.e. (?) It probably was, but using i.e. and e.g. interchangeably is an inadvertent admission of illiteracy, something akin to the appalling misuse of the possessive apostrophe. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone? Covers head to protect it from a sudden rock avalanche that appeared from nowhere, and hastily exits stage right. |

| 871492 | 2010-04-03 04:07:00 | Yup - I fell to the inappropriate use gremlin again. I've always mixed them up (ie & e.g.) so I plead guilty. Although an English/Americanism also dictates that the ie is followed by a semi-colon, (ie;) whereas the eg is dotted with periods (e.g.). Get me a rock - a BIG rock! |

Ya know - I really want to find the video of Zola's "Germinal" too . I understand it is available, but very hard to find . I read the book although it wasn't required reading and the movie would be a good review of it for me . About three years ago I found one in Bulgarian with French subtitles . Lots of good that did me! Would you check your home library and see if you might be able to loan a spare copy? In English - even youse guys form of English . |
