872318 2010-04-02 20:47:00 Are you saying that since 'no one forced' them to come here we can discriminate them?

What an excuse to be a racist! Why don't you just be bold enough to say that "I am a racist"

872319 2010-04-02 22:15:00 I think you'll find not hiring people of different cultures is usually a decision based on simple practicality; employers pay lip service to encouraging diversity in the workplace, but no-one wants to have to deal with a co-worker who isn't verbally fluent, or articulate and concise on paper (even though that's not the reality of a lot of immigrants).

Rightly or wrongly, people want to be around people with similar backgrounds, or at the very least a common frame of reference.

872321 2010-04-02 22:25:00 The same thing happened to disabled people when I was employed in the 1990's. They (my employer), had something against them, So got rid of them. They denied it of course, but I thought otherwise. Altho, it was their loss in the end. They had to pay me to leave, then re-employed me a few mths later lol Speedy Gonzales (78)
872322 2010-04-02 22:26:00 After I turned 50 I stopped putting my date of birth on my CV. I got more interviews after that. Sweep (90)
872323 2010-04-02 22:31:00 Well at least those Asians are looking for jobs.

I have worked with many Asians and still do. Sure there english is a tad iffy at times and they have no chance of understanding sarcasm or dry humour, but the ones I have been around are respectful helpful and polite. I admit these are professional people with degrees etc, but I do feel they fit NZ culture much closer than many pacific Islanders (may seem racist but its my opinion).

872324 2010-04-02 22:34:00 After uni when I went to winz we were told at the seminar .. maybe there are discrimination out there .. but what can you do with it .. just put up with it and do something else .. If that door shuts, go to the next one ...

Generally speaking you look at your own peers by in large they get on with people that are similar to their own.

If you want customer service you want an attractive female.

It's human. Go to any country and you find people in their own circles largely.

People want status, money and elite-ism.

IMO I think people choose to live in NZ or any other country b/c it is generally worth the tradeoff. NZ is known for its green, better for families etc. Kiwi's also relocate overseas .. big deal but mostly to AU, UK, USA, CA, not many to v diff countries. There are a few ie., English teachers but how many of them make it permanent. ...

One of the winz case managers I knew was from India, a former University lecturer and now been a case manager for over 10yrs.... he might of gone to a office job in the same dept thou. Case managers are not paid much more than a call centre operator, maybe 5k....

Re: pacific people. I've thought they are more down to earth. Not incl the gangs and things like that of course. You meet a work colleague at work like a pakeha, maybe more women as office has more them I think, but all they do is whinge, b****, complain, play the office politics, go out to lunch at a cafeteria, go the gym at lunch breaks with their work girl friends, go to sauna and massage during work hours or a extended lunch break, go out, go drinking, go clubbing, talk about getting a shaz... whinge about the weather, whinge about work, go eating, go drinking, about the big sport, about that trip to Marlborough or the Hawkes Bay. Talking and doing coffee breaks, going to cafes etc etc.. You also get guys and gals who go to the pub a few times on the work week, goes home and goes to work the next day .. like if they got no life. No wonder they have no money. Then they complain about no option but renting for their rest of their lives. No money for holidays. All that self indulgence. Office may have a get together, like each provide something for morning tea or after hours event, they always have an excuse but they sure don't have excuses for their own activities ..... For some of them the only even if they attend is the Xmas function, haha. Maybe give some face to the General Manager, haha ...
