Have to admit i was a bit thrown by the existing wiring, the jackpoint i connected to had blue/white striped in slot 4, with orange/white striped in slot 3 (but as it worked I didn't touch it), just made sure my extension followed the standards

It looks like some wally has just picked a pair of wires at random to connect between the 1st and 2nd jackpoints and split the pairs of wires.

"Some new cable will use a Blue wire and a White wire with a Blue stripe.
If these do not exist or are too short to connect, select the Orange wire and the Black wire (which are normally used for a second line). Some new cable will use an Orange wire and a White wire with an Orange stripe for the second line."

If noise is a problem it is slightly better to use a pair that are twisted together ie either the Blue/whiteblue pair or the Orange/whiteorange pair.
