872345 2010-04-04 06:45:00 Well I would never buy asian takeaways from a white man, would you?

LOL. You think asian takeaways is like the real thing? not.
So yes, I probably would.

I would expect at least some chefs to be asian though in a real asian restaurant.........or the chef to have trained in asia under asian chefs.

872346 2010-04-04 09:01:00 Even those so-called 'CHEFs' in the Chinese restaurants are not that fantastic. Just look at the menus, 99% of them are very similar (if not exactly the same), same name, same presentation, same ingredients, same tastes, etc. It's hard for them to find a job as a chef if they were to go back to Asia. They just copy each other - absolutely no creation of their own. Just walk in to any Chinese restaurant, order the dishes without having to look at the menus as they are 99% the same! bk T (215)

:clap I agree. The worst abomination they conjure up they call Nasi Goreng. They take the usual handful of ingredients, and add curry powder to give it a taste other than the other bland crap they dish up. But I will say that a really delightful takeaway can be had from the Chinese takeaway at Ostend (Waiheke Is). Had a meal from there Thursday night, and it was superb. Wish they'd move to Ellerslie :drool

872349 2010-04-04 09:30:00 Don't blame them....blame the general population's tastes or rather their fear of trying something new. What my own mother cooks on a regular or occasional basis would by far surpass any takeaway in NZ and probably even $60+-per-person Chinese restaurants (which are usually just grossly overpriced food anyway).

So yeah, most takeaway menus are bland. But that's apparently how most NZers like'em.

Damn right! Sweet-n-sour pork on noodles, with wontons = good night's feed for me.

872351 2010-04-04 09:35:00 Can someone recommend a real good Indonesian / Malay (not Malaysian, as Malaysian is rojak - mixture of Malays + Chinese dishes) restaurant? I can't find a restaurant serving true, genuine authentic Indonesian/Malay food in Auckland. Similarly, can't find a really good Chinese restaurant or a Thai restaurant. bk T (215)

I think too, some of these immigrants have zero conversational skills and/or understanding of the English language. Try asking them a question and usually all you get back is a nodding of the head, a smile (sometimes), and "Yes! Yes!" which loosely translated means, "I don't understand what you said, but I know I have to make a noise back, then you give me money."

Would anyone of us Kiwis move to mainland China, set up a takeaway bar or other business, and without knowing the language, hope to survive and make a living?
