873123 2010-05-23 22:21:00 But to my knowledge the focus is on wiring. What about wireless? Wireless is surely the future. I do agree with one of Chill's points. Most people don't need state of the art speeds. Companies can get that sure. But for most individuals a 2Mbps or a 4Mbps can be more than enough.

Wired is cheaper, more reliable and better ping (my friend's NZWireless connection even though 3Mbit proves all those to be true)

Yes I know about that . The trend is towards wireless . People get a lot more productive out of it both personal and business .

Provided the option of a affordable wireless plan . I gather we see quite an increase taking up wireless .

If the plan price drops just 30% .

Sounds like you are addicted to the Internet. Do you really have to have same everywhere you go?

Sure people want internet access while they are mobile, and you must have wireless such as 3G network and WiFi access points do this .

However at home, I think most people would rather have something much faster and more reliable and cheaper .

I just see no good reason to have wireless internet at home or work, unless like my friend, you're too far away from the ADSL network and it's your only option .

Not to mention he can't take his connection with him in a car anyway

I'm not addicted to it. I have a 3GB plan.

But the reality is that is the trend these days. If I go for a ski trip in the weekend it's so much easier and cheaper to grab the info off the phone. Check weather, email than try to find a internet cafe and pay whatever they charge. Surf the internet and find a ph number to call them. Whakapapa Village, Turangi, Bulls are not that popular with amenities.

People can work offsite, like a meeting or a presentation or to client's premise and can access their corporate network via wireless.

With wireless, if it is affordable it could be your sole internet. You study at the library and check emails and sign into he school's website. You can do without the landline.

If just a 30% drop in price, I think a substantial amount of people would take it up .... even if wireless is inferior.

873128 2010-05-23 22:43:00 Why you would want to check work emails on the weekend is beyond me, actually work anything on the weekend.
I can imagine some would benefit from wireless while on the road, but everyone?? bugger that

In my experience you cant beat a good cable

The base plan pricing for ADSL Broadband isn't the issue (~NZD$30 a month), it's what the data usage is costing us that's the problem (~$2 per-GB).

Why have a 100m/bit, or even a 20m/bit connection when you can chew through your whole data cap in a matter of 4 hours (Based off a 20GB cap)? How absurd! If you've got as little as 5GB, that could be gone in <1 hour!

873130 2010-05-23 22:51:00 Chill I was referring to wireless. For the price drop.
For wireless if 4GB was $50-60 more people would take it up ....

For ADSL I agree, they need to drop price/GB or add more GB to the plan. A reason why I won't spend money upgrading to ADSL2 router and my plan to FS/FS. With the small data I got I am happy on FS/128.

Wireless - well not for overtime. If your job entails overtime and weekend work to get the job done - then so be it. Those people and me in the past have worked that way to get it done - go to the office in the weekends. Cos that was our job.

Wireless is just so much productive, you can be anywhere in the daytime part of your job or anywhere for your personal side.

I think that commuting to work, checking and replying to your own personal emails and some surfing would appeal to some people. In the morning people seldom have time to check emails before you head out the door. At least its what some do overseas. NZ just doesn't have the infrastructure.
