873700 2010-04-06 10:22:00 Just studying now . . .

I find that the questions can be ambigious . I am using online test sites for practice . And, the need to remember 2 pages of CPU socket designs, screen resolutions, IRQ numbers which isn't set in concrete anyway .

It's not aligned, if a person studies the driving road code its tightly aligned to the actual test .

All in all we have 3 weeks allocated, I'm behind . .

873701 2010-04-06 10:49:00 I did some of the Cisco IT essentials course last year, which I think is the same as your talking about.

In the end I failed, was averaging above 80 (our class pass rate) until the practical, which I flunked .

873702 2010-04-06 10:52:00 Do you mean the COMPTIA A+? nedkelly (9059)
873703 2010-04-06 10:54:00 Yes CompTIA ..

There is a 900pg book, that takes a while the end of chapter questions are fine, the CD test scenario questions are fine. But then when you get to things like measureup.com for practice test questions ... they are scenario based questions fine but ... the answers can be ambigious how it is worded when troubleshooting, it can be so close to each other and the need to remember number stuff just for the sake.

You and me both, after 10 Years of fixing computers I have decided to sit my A+ 701 & 702 Cert .

Completely agree with you . I don't see the need to memorize countless lists protocols, Sockets, and every PCMCIA Card ever made for real word computer repairs .
With plenty of resources at hand it makes for memorizing such lists errounous .

However, I have learnt a lot of interesting stuff on the way . . . How much of it I will remember and ever need to implement based on study alone, I doubt will be very much .

Was like that at Uni when I was there for 6 months. So easy to "cram" for an exam, and pass with a C-, but still not actually "learn" anything.

Same thing when I worked at EDS and we were doing the MCSE. It's dead simple to memorize the answers, or just take a guess based on what's logical, you'll still get a pretty darn good pass rate, they were multi-choice :p

873706 2010-04-06 14:10:00 I haven't done A+.
Have done Cisco IT essentials 1 & 2 (A on 1, B on 2)
Panduit Fundamentals of voice and data cabling (A)
Which earned me a Computer Technicians Cert at CPIT.:)

You lucky lil...

I went to CPIT for a level 6 Diploma in ICT after passing a few free courses for entry criteria. I bombed around the 6-9 month mark after being crammed full of 'ethics' and 'accounting' and 'business practice' and 'interpersonal skills'. $5000 down the drain.

Yep did A+ about 10 years ago although remember it well . Online free material and free test sites even back then was "all" I needed to pass . Just take your time, its no big deal if it takes another month or two before you feel your ready . I remember doing about an hour a day for 6 weeks myself .

A mate back then spent 7 . 5K at Carrich computer training doing some lame half year course for A+ and half the class and him failed .
