872212 2010-04-02 15:37:00 Am looking at putting together a cpu for flatmate. Looking at cpu's to buy i noticed the intel core 2 quad q8400. It has a reasonable price and does well in cpu benchmark tests compared to many other more expensive ones ive seen. The benchmark tests of the q8400 was also rated quite highly compared to most dual cores. Would this however be due to the fact that the tests are done using programs which run a varity of tests at the same time and would thus more likely utilise all four quads. I mean, the tests done by the test programs would, it seems to me, not be symptomatic of real life as we are rarely utilising so many programs at once. Do the benchmark tests therefore have an automatic bias towards quad cores over dual cores, thus misleading many cpu consumers and inflating quad core prices. mrpink (15709)

Computers run hundreds of background processes, even when they're sitting idle.

Running dual or quad core means that the load is spread out, so when you launch a multi-threaded program, it can make better use of all 4 cores. Or, you can run more programs at the same time without so much bog-down.

The benchmarks are accurate.

872214 2010-04-02 22:17:00 I would be looking at a Intel I5 750 quad on the 1156 platform over a C2Q8400. Higher performance and the 775 sockets days are very numbered. The price is similar maybe around $100 more expensive depending on what your comparing exactly, cant recommend anyone builds a 775 now.

In certain high end games "recently" quads are showing tangible benefit over dual cores with high end graphic cards. Quads also have an advantage in things like multi-threaded encoding/rendering/Archiving. If you don't plan to do much of any of those things, you will prob get away with a dual core for the next few years.
