| 1147217 | 2010-10-24 01:30:00 | Isn't a hacker a security expert? I'm not talking about the slang meaning of a hacker, I'm talking about what one really is. Nothing illegal. So a hacker go to a bank and says I can hack into your back and steal a hundred dollars and if I can do this you will pay me $10,000 to fix your problem which is pretty cheap to fix a hold in a security network. So am I missing something. | lostsoul62 (16011) | ||
| 1147218 | 2010-10-24 01:41:00 | You're missing something. Take a look here (www.catb.org) - that's a nutshell definition. What you're talking about is a penetration tester. |

A security expert is hired to test for weaknesses and plug them. Someone who asks for money to fix the weakness he found without being asked is an extortionist. I have no idea what a penetration tester is but it doesn't sound like something for a family forum. |

I've allway been into hardware, software, and networks and never thought anything about hackers. But the article clears a lot of things up. |

The traditional hackers are known as "Black Hats" they hack to steal or be malicious . "Grey hats" generally pretend they are white hats, but also use there tellant and often inside knowledge to steal . Really you would class all good hackers as security experts yes . |

It's humility, a drive for knowledge, and I believe even RMS even said it's a "Playful desire to understand the unknown" or something to that effect. Look up this movie: www.imdb.com It'll give you a bit of an insight into the history and culture :) |
