1147055 2010-10-23 01:49:00 I have a Canon Pixma iP 8500 photo printer - and I've happy with the way it prints photos. :)

However, it also prints cds/dvds - and this is where there is a problem. This disc prints ok - but with a black smudge/mark on the disc. I've cleaned the bottom plate and done the various 'deep cleaning' routines. It is now slightly better, but not yet gone. :(

Suggestions? Where to go for help? The printer is not now brand new, but I'm not yet ready to replace it.

As always - TIA for your help.

1147056 2010-10-23 03:33:00 No suggestions my last Pixma did it when it got old too. Since that one went up in smoke literally I have a new one the 4700 and it is fine for now so fingers crossed it stays like that gary67 (56)
1147057 2010-10-23 04:53:00 Some printers have a sort of sponge tray where the print head sits when not in use. This could be saturated with ink and needs cleaning out.

1147058 2010-10-23 05:24:00 Not a problem when I print photos, only when printing cds.... Is there a different tray for when printing cds?

I haven't tried to pull the thing apart yet - reluctant to go down that track!

1147060 2010-10-23 07:09:00 You may want to do a bit of googling for workarounds.

I don't print CDs myself but I have read that folks have difficulty.
Here is just one link.

1147061 2010-10-23 08:45:00 I have no difficulties normally as I said earlier my old IP3000 did eventually do that at 5 years old. I still have the tray for that one. My new IP4700 doesn't do it but it is only a few months old gary67 (56)

The tray for ip4500

That's the one! But let me explain a little more. What I mean, is that is the tray I use to get the cd/dvd into the printer to be printed. The problem is not with the tray - that works just fine. The problem is BLACK INK smudges on the surface of the disc being printed (as well as what I asked to be printed - picture/print/whatever). There is no other colour smudges (in spite of using 8 colour cartridges).

1147063 2010-10-23 09:47:00 Hi again R.M. Printer waste tanks can occasionally cause problems similar to what you describe. A Google on those words - printer waste tank, - brings up heaps of advice, etc. See for example: www.ehow.com

As far as I can understand, the problem is that the damn heads automatically self clean and each time this happens a jet of ink goes through in to a pad of what appears to be paper towel type stuff and this can eventually exceed its holding capacity.

1147064 2010-10-23 10:56:00 I found problems with printing labels on my Pixma.

Solved by getting a DVD Writer with Lightscribe.

Saves ink too. :)
