1147025 2010-10-22 22:23:00 I am planning a new build and will have a number of criteria / restrictions to try to meet re IT backbone. I'd like to see if anyone has ideas re the alternatives here.
1.) We will not have access to power or telephone lines (off grid), so economy of power use is an issue
2.) fixed IP phone rather than just use of Cellular phone has some advantage
3.) Wireless is OK, but ethernet helps manage other technology including security, media service, and possibly has advantages re power economy etc

I use PoE to support a distant satelite dish, video servellience, wireless internet boosters etc and so know what is possible. However it struck me since IP phones can be run completely by PoE, can simple ethernet switches be run on native PoE? I can cobble together a PoE splitter as this is the common method, but I'd like to know if such a simple switch exists.

However, do we really need PoE switches? By using daisy chaining (which is effectively what I am after, ie few home-run conections, it could save a heap of wiring... ? eg a single line going out to a number of places, each with an economical 'switch' ....so effectively daisy chaining as we used to with BNC ..?

I know such technology exists, but it seems to be associated with specialist Data aquisition sensors etc.

Anyone can advise?

1147026 2010-10-23 04:41:00 I see LevelOne does a PoE-powered switch (on Ascent here (www.ascent.co.nz)), but it doesn't appear to act as repeater also, so it's the end of the line for the power. Maybe a PoE 2-port repeater plus the switch? MushHead (10626)
1147027 2010-10-23 09:05:00 Many thanks it;s certainly a good start. I'll continue to explore the daisy chain option as ping times and traffic are likley not to be a big problem with some parts of the circuit. PhilW (11688)
