1146926 2010-10-22 05:22:00 Anybody tried this? I mean the usb modem in a laptop.

If so, how has it been to live with? And how does it compare with what you used before?

1146927 2010-10-22 06:07:00 I use it when im not at home, and I think it is very good, I get a constant 350kbps roaming on Vodafone's network with the 50mb pack for $10. Make sure you check if you are in a 2Degrees Broadband area before buying any data packs. nedkelly (9059)
1146928 2010-10-22 06:23:00 To get the best of both worlds buy a Telecom T-stick on Trademe so that you can use both Telecom XT and 2D SIMs. If you get a Voda or 2D data stick you will never be able to use on XT if you want to later.. paulw (1826)
1146929 2010-10-22 06:38:00 Hmm telecom stuff can work on 3g? Thought telecom had their own frequency. Or am I thinking of CDMA? nedkelly (9059)
1146930 2010-10-22 07:43:00 I recently got one of these USB modems with 2GB of free data on it, because Xnet refuses to give me a part month and I only need broadband for 5 days of next month. Yes, I realise that I just spent more than I would on a whole month's naked DSL ($100 vs about $80), but at least I have something to show for it at the end, and don't feel ripped off.

I have found it to be quite fast, using it in the Auckland CBD it has been close to the 3.6Mbps max download rate. Just as usable as fixed broadband for what it's supposed to be used for, which is just browsing (let's face it, if you wanted to download large files, you would go broke very fast).

Pricing wise, 2GB of mobile broadband that lasts 2 months for $50 isn't a bad deal compared to what Vodafone or Telecom charge.

Telecom XT uses 850Meg and 2100 Meg, 2D uses 2100 for 3G.. T-Sticks do both..

Their are 3 (or 4) bands to the 3g mobile network, Vodafone use 1800/900MHz whilst telecom use 850MHz, the telecom T-stick hardware however is tri or quad band, meaning it supports 3 or 4 frequencies. this means it can be used with any SIM that runs on supported frequencies. The 2degrees hardware is 1800/900MHz only, no 850MHz support, no telecom

1146933 2010-10-23 00:26:00 Thanks. Not sure I understand the using 2degrees to roam Vodafone - is it cheaper than going direct to VF? Can't be faster surely?

Any of you had Telecom or VF before? I'm looking to get a feel for pros and cons. I like the no contact idea of 2d but not sure if it will be adequate. Not overly concerned about the technology (don't understand it anyway), just the results.

Maybe need to ask Vodafone intelligence? :p

Re: the prices. 2D is cheaper in the main areas where they have their own towers but once you are outside and roaming thru VF the prices suddently change a lot. I think it iis $6 for 50MB arn't it .. while VF or Telecom can get access to their standard data plans throughout the country. (2D only get their cheaper data plans in their own areas).

1146935 2010-10-23 03:38:00 If your in an area with no 2D coverage their phones and such default to Vodafone networks until you get back into 2D coverage gary67 (56)
