2010-04-10 22:56:00 | Did anybody notice this item in yesterdays news home.nzcity.co.nz says the fellow doused himself with petrol then the police tasered him, I'd say the cops were damned lucky they didnt ignite him . Risk of fire injury Tasers come with express instructions not to use them where flammable (en.wikipedia.org) liquids or fumes may be present, such as filling stations (en.wikipedia.org) or by police raiding methamphetamine (en.wikipedia.org) labs, as TASERs, like other electric devices, have been found to ignite flammable materials. An evaluative study carried out by the British (en.wikipedia.org) Home Office (en.wikipedia.org) investigated the potential for TASERs to ignite CS gas (en.wikipedia.org). Seven trials were conducted, in which CS gas canisters containing methyl isobutyl ketone (en.wikipedia.org) (a solvent used in all CS sprays utilized by the United Kingdom (en.wikipedia.org) police) were sprayed over mannequins wearing street clothing. The TASERs were then fired at the mannequins. In two of the seven trials, "the flames produced were severe and engulfed the top half of the mannequin, including the head". This poses a particular problem for law enforcement, as some police departments approve the use of CS before the use of a TASER. From here en.wikipedia.org Dont get me wrong, I sort of support the police use of tasers, as a (usually) non-lethal tool to control 'difficult' people, definitely better than firearms, but I hope the cops realised the danger and won't do that again.

2010-04-10 23:02:00 | If he was going to set himself on fire, then what difference does it make if he does it with a lighter, or does it by getting tasered? There are extremely strict rules around the use of tasers in NZ, and if any rules were broken then the media would be all over it.

2010-04-10 23:47:00 | This same thing happened in Australia in the last month or so, guy had doused himself with petrol and got tasered for his trouble and ended up on fire. I beleive the fire service may have been close by at the time though. Considering that the Australian Police carry side arms and have been known to use them, probably better to get tasered and live than shot and dead.

2010-04-11 00:38:00 | risk setting him on fire or shoot him, good call by the police. don't forget police have fire extinguishers in the cars. if he had caught on fire he wouldn't have gotten burnt much, if hes lying on the ground, before they put him out. | tweak'e (69) | |
2010-04-11 01:20:00 | Like R2 said in previous thread taser him then book him for unlicensed break dancing. I pretty sure the police would have thought about zapping him doused in petrol if I was the cop I wouldnt have hesitated I just would have hesitated putting him out.

2010-04-11 20:11:00 | I find NZ city reporting not the best at times. He did not douse himself in petrol as the report says. From NZ Herald When police officers arrived Khalil threw petrol over them before running back in the house. He then doused the living room in petrol and set it alight. Senior Sergeant Mark Fergus said: "[He] came out of the address with the lighter in his hand and refused to put it down. "When he had moved away from the accelerant a Taser was deployed to safely effect the arrest of the male." And from the police own media release When Police staff approached the male he began spreading accelerant around the home and threw accelerant over Police. He then ran back inside the house. The family members were safely removed from the house, and police cordoned off the address with the male inside. The Fire Service was in attendance at the scene. A short time later the male came out of the address with the lighter in his hand and refused to put it down. When he had moved away from the accelerant a taser was deployed to safely effect the arrest of the male. At this time the Fire Service were able to enter the family home and extinguish the fire. The home and vehicles are extensively damaged.

2010-04-12 01:34:00 | Even with the current (;)) high cost of electricity, Tasers are a good cost saver. Do you know how many highland flings can be initiated with a dollar's worth of electricity in Tasers? Given the fees that Gyms charge, the cops should be entitled to recover the value of the healthy exercise they have convinced the miscreants to do as a substitute for being naughty.

2010-04-12 06:57:00 | Do you know how many highland flings can be initiated with a dollar's worth of electricity in Tasers? Have you seen that email that went around of the guy in the states that bought his wife a personal taser for her birthday, he was wondering how two little triple AA batteries would be effective so decided to test it on hiomself first...... If I can find the email, might repost it into here, whether it is true or not, it is a laugh a minute.....which we need in this world to keep us all sane, a good laugh once in a while.
