However, InternetNZ’s senior research fellow in cyberlaw, Jonathon Penney, intellectual property lawyer Rick Shera of Lowndes Jordan and independent technology consultant and media commentator Colin Jackson also spoke and warned of the potential consequences of ACTA.
There has been no economic analysis on ACTA, Jackson pointed out, saying that instead of providing benefits to New Zealand exporters, overseas industries are the ones that will reap the rewards.
InternetNZ’s Penney says the spirit of the treaty will have to be adhered to under international law, and New Zealand can’t enact legislation that contradicts ACTA. As it stands, ACTA is essentially an extension of the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act or DMCA, according to Penney and introducing it will alter New Zealand law, especially the Copyright Act.

874436 2010-04-10 02:10:00 im watching r2.co.nz stream only because the trademe forum had a link.

No one knows
Few care
People can only care about so much - saving the whales/world/carbon dioxide seems to use up all the revolutionary people lol

I actually have the few that nothing will change unless 1/4 of the population jumps up and down - because industry has the ear of government-its hard to challenge that.

Important things on peoples minds : american idol etc lol

874437 2010-04-10 02:17:00 It won't go away and it will happen, irrespective of protests or submissions.
The National govt will pass it in the interests of cozying up to Washington.
John Key is very keen to be Obama's little b1tch, and in the process help extend US law and corporate control to us.
Is that not what the US revolution against England was about, governance without representation?
The last Labour govt was just as bad.
Anyone keen to start a NZ branch of the Pirate Party for the next election? :clap

Not after 9 years of brainwashing by the last Labor gov.. Now if you were to put in the news media that ACTA is a evil plan by the US Government to take over NZs laws then you get the lefties out on the streets maybe..

874441 2010-04-10 06:01:00 Quite a few PressF1 members have gone on record to say that they do not vote.

In my opinion that's the best time to make a difference if you are going to as an individual.

Personally I think we would achieve quite a bit for NZ as a whole if every citizen transferred to the Maori roll and voted only in the Maori seats. Currently there are 7 maori seats thus there would be only 7 MPs as opposed to the current number which is over 100 and grows according to rules which change anyway.

By Citizens I will include all people born in NZ and all who could hold a NZ passport if applied for.

Naturally all people on the Maori roll will get a part of all the settlements as of right.
