874238 2010-04-08 05:19:00 Looks like the local iwi do. Thats why they've banned it Speedy Gonzales (78)
874239 2010-04-08 05:27:00 What if they find the body today, and want shellfish for the tangi tomorrow?

874240 2010-04-08 05:29:00 Well, since its not a maori thats missing, they probably wont have one Speedy Gonzales (78)
874241 2010-04-08 05:36:00 It is a standard Māori cultural process to do this if a dead body is in the water. A rahui is declared to stop fishing in that stretch of water until the body is located and the water is cleansed of any contamination.

Makes sense to me - who wants to eat eels, paua, crayfish etc that have been grazing on a dead body, particularly if it is your relation?

Move along folks, no story here, nothing to do with ownership or "fishing banned in NZ". It is just the resident twonk trying his stirring again.

874245 2010-04-08 07:06:00 Lance4k, as mentioned in a earlier thread, first read the article without taking out of context and second, learn up on the culture involved before commenting.

No one owns the water. But it is a standard custom to cleanse the area, not uncommon to NZ, found else where as well in the world in various cultures. Probably on other planets as well.:sleep
