874876 2010-04-11 07:28:00 Quick question, with Windows XP you can use one license key to activate and re-activate various installations a number of times

Does this work in Win7 or can you only activate one installation on one machine before the same key doesn't work?

Same with W7 - Nothing has changed in that respect.

If you have a Multi User or Volume license ( either XP or W7) then yes you can.

874879 2010-04-11 09:51:00 It doesn't give you the non-genuine message when you first install windows - only if you try to activate and it finds something doesn't match up. I think it should advise you to call the support line instead of offering a get genuine pack, but I don't see any problem with it telling you the windows install may not be genuine. Greven (91)

No. I've had it report my legitimate copy as non-genuine without a failed activation. I agree with Digby; it's a badly-worded message.

Very good reason to say 'not genuine'

slightly off topic..
It also may not be genuine. There are alot of fake MS products on trademe..still....
Ive had a customer have his trademe 'full retail, new in box' Office07 come up with 'not genuine' after 2 months. I warned him if its 1/3 retail price then something is fishy. A very good fake. Could only spot it as the plastic case latch didnt work and the CD had a sticker with the hologram . MS dont use stickers on install disks.

Have also seen a Toshiba Notebook with a fake XP COA sticker on it (Tosh bought from NZ retailer !!!). Confirmed to be fake sticker after checking on MS website (they give things to look for on the OEM sticker)

874882 2010-04-12 02:06:00 Be fair; if Microsoft did something properly, people would expect them to do other things properly. We all know that ain't going to happen. ;) R2x1 (4628)
