874225 2010-04-08 07:55:00 My bad. You're right bk_T : B= x - 3, not x + 3.

So my answer for their times is totally wrong. Back to the drawing board!

874227 2010-04-08 10:19:00 B+P+M=24
B+3=P
3M=B

Then I rearranged the equasions to x+y+z=a:

B+P+M=24
B-P=-3
3M-B=0

Then just bang them into the calculator:

B=9
P=12
M=3

Simple!!!!!!

Edit: Oh its already been solved lol. I should probably read the whole thread before replying :D

874228 2010-04-08 10:26:00 Don't worry, it's happened to me before. :blush: pcuser42 (130)

....

Banging them in a calc is not showing the working, well not for School Cert anyway...
Bill = Peter - 3
Mike = Bill / 3

24 = Peter + Bill + Mike
24 = P + (P-3)+ 1/3(P-3)
24 = 2P - 3 + 1/3(P-3)
24 = 2P - 3 + 1/3P - 1
24 = 2P - 4 + 1/3P
28 = 2P +1/3P
28 = 2 1/3P
28 = 7/3P
84 = 7P
12 = P (Peters Time)

Peter = 12
Bill = 9
Mike = 3

Kickin' it Old School... :p

874231 2010-04-09 15:30:00 Should be the total time taken for the 3 boys to complete the raceIf this is the case, then every answer so far is wrong, because the total time taken for the three boys to complete the race is the same as the time taken for the slowest boy to complete it (i.e. Peter) - *not* the sum of the three boys' times as everyone else seems to think.

In light of that:
Peter's time (P) = 24
Bill's time (B) = P - 3
Michael's time (M) = B / 3

Therefore:
P = 24 (the question tells us this)

B = P - 3 (substitute the value for P)
B = 24 - 3 (simplify)
B = 21

M = B / 3 (substitute value for B)
M = 21 / 3 (simplify)
M = 7

So the final times are actually:
Peter: 24 mins
Bill: 21 mins
Michael: 7 mins

One would have to wonder if Michael has been experimenting with something he shouldn't?

It is for NCEA...

As roddy_boy said, it actually is valid working.

874234 2010-04-10 05:38:00 For NCEA, "Quite fast", "Medium", "Slow", or "kwik" will probably get credits since to penalise students for being dorks would be discriminatory, judgemental and elitist. R2x1 (4628)
