And LTNZ is always changing the goalposts but maybe last year, they did clarify the rust rule as rust that is structal rust and likely to affect the safety / strength of the car if you can make sense of that.

It came about as some WOF testers were failing cars just for the smell of rust on parts other than structal / frame.

LTNZ may have changed the rules again by now...........

Some family in Canada said there might not be a WOF but I need to check on that :D But uncle's van, I first rode it in 1990, it's still active with rust holes around his CMC (sp?) back van door :D

Careful when you take it to panel beaters, they can be $$$ and as cars aged, you might consider getting another car  We had some servicing done to the car, but the rust came back maybe not at that area but a related area and has spread to the maybe the seat belt chassis from the boot hinge area - the rear window had to be taken off for the 2nd job and now we just gonna trash it and get another. We thought about auctioning it off at Trademe or at Turners but the fees just wasn't worth the bother. Some car yards may give us something for it. Rest of the body is fine and the engine is fine, 1.3L, had since 1992, 3yr used at the time, the clock says 160,000km, it was prob clocked back when we got it but since 1995 when we had it we haven't added much to it.

Not sure of the cost factor, can be done cheaply albeit roughly if you do it yourself, but it may just not worth the hassle because there will be rust in other parts of the car.
Might be time to drive down to pick a part at night cold chisel off the chassis number and vin plates if you can, take off the rego plates and run.
Its hard for the testers to be consistent because rust isnt consistent, there is always more there than what you first estimate.
I have found Rosebank testing station hard on rust and Kumeu not so picky but they are picky on suspension and steering.
Also they have good and bad hair days like the rest of us.
