2010-04-10 12:10:00 | Sweep, you are missing the point. The message says that Windows is not geniune, when it has not yet been activated. This is not true and can be a source of confusion and fear for many users. This is what Digby is complaining about, and for good reason - as several of my customers have encountered such a message and taken it at its word! George12, I don't think I'm missing the point. There are many messages out there on the Internet that would tell you that your computer is infected and just download xyz and we will fix it for you. People do just that because of the FUD factor, (Fear, Uncertainty and Doom ) Does Digby take all messages at its word? The computer said so? Oh yeah I'm going to get $1,000,000 from Nigeria as I saw that. I really believe that as it's in black and white.

2010-04-10 12:20:00 | Not everyone who installs Windows is a computer tech. People can install it, see the message and think "crap, I've got a non genuine copy of Windows!" - that being exactly what the message says. Nobody's saying it's hard to activate - just that Windows should not produce a message claiming that it is not genuine when it most likely is. But you miss the point. Some people do supply a non genuine copy of Windows and Microsoft have a right to check in my view. As Wainui says. Activate! Any complaints ring Microsoft and try again. Any further complaints phone the supplier of the hardware and software installed.

2010-04-10 12:25:00 | AND at the same time there is a message to activate it - I've done countless installs of W7 and only ever seen that once (after leaving it over 2 nights to carry on). If a person has enough clues to install windows and all drivers correctly, and they have purchased a legit version then theres no problem - the only reason I know of it comes up with the message is because it has not yet been activated. I Have sold W7 (legally) as in people purchase all the parts and assemble the PC themselves and no ones ever complained about that message. One thing that can cause the message, if the BIOS clock, and system clock are out of sync by a great amount - once again, comes back to knowing how to setup a PC. Just curious -- Why is that - have you sold them the software only and they install it or not activated the PC yourself ? One guy installed it himself, and then called me to sort some stuff out for him, one of which was that. The other time I have seen the message was actually Vista - sorry, bad memory. It's not a major problem and not really worth getting into arguments about. But sweep, your comparison is rather silly. Those messages are lies designed to deceive whereas this message is from Microsoft. All I am saying is that it would be better if it said the correct situation - that Windows is unactivated. It can also be a problem when trying to install MS software requiring a Genuine check. Again it will tell you that Windows is not genuine if you have forgotten to activate. Anyway thats enough arguing from me - it's not a very important issue. Also I am not trying to say (as Digby is) that W7 activation sucks - it's the best yet especially with auto activation. And W7 is a great OS. Just that that particular message could be rewritten IMO.

2010-04-10 12:43:00 | I agree that the issue is not important as I mentioned in post #2. The problem was fixed as Digby has said anyway in post #4. So why did you feel you had to post in #6 when Digby had no problem any more as it was fixed?

2010-04-10 12:55:00 | Sweep, please note, this is Chat not PF1. Digby was not asking for a solution to his problem (he had already solved it). He was complaining! We were having a discussion. I am contribute to said discussion if I want to. Also, I fully agree with MS taking measures to prevent piracy. That is entirely irrelevant to this issue, this is just a message that I think should be worded differently! Makes no difference to their ability to stop pirates.

Agreed that this is Chat and I agree that you can contribute in any discussion if you want to. When you say "We were having a discussion" who do you mean by "We"? Was that Digby and you? If so I fail to see that Digby had any communication in this thread with you personally and made two posts only. It could be that you have done private messages of course but the rest of us are not privy to those anyway. |

2010-04-10 19:56:00 | Windows 7 Home premium. It came up with a message in the system tray "This Software is Not Genuine" I registered over the phone and that message disappeared. However with Windows 7, this time my first installation had a problem with my motherboard and I had to get a new motherboard. When I went to re-activate over the phone I got a recorded message that I was on different hardware. I was then put though to a nice Indian lady (I presume) who right away gave me a new number without asking any questions ! ( Yep, it should have just been an activation message. As for the new board thing, I changed my board recently, it wanted to reactivate but I must have chosen the right combo of phone buttons as I didn't get any human. BTW that was crap - first choice I had was is this copy of windows been installed on only one PC? Yes. Next question, have you uninstalled it from the other PC? What other PC? So I chose yes anyway....
