874215 2010-04-08 05:53:00 I have re-checked my math....

I still say the answer is:
B=8
P=11
M=5

8+11+5=24
11-3=8
5x3≠8

Sorry, it's not correct.

sorry read the first post wrong.

874217 2010-04-08 06:13:00 x = 2.4

Peter = 2.4
Bill = 5.4
Michael = 16.2

Total = 24mins. :)

Peter = x
Bill = x + 3
Michael = 3x + 9

5x + 12 = 24

5x = 24 - 12 = 12

12/5 = 2.4
catspyjamas (15614)
874221 2010-04-08 06:38:00 Peter = x
Bill = x + 3
Michael = 3x + 9

5x + 12 = 24

5x = 24 - 12 = 12

12/5 = 2.4

If Peter = x,
Bill should = x-3 (as Bill is 3 min faster than Peter)
Michael = 3x + 9 -- how did you get this?
bk T (215)
874222 2010-04-08 06:40:00 Michael = 3x + 9 -- how did you get this?

Bill = x+3
Michael = 3B, therefore M=3(x+3)
Expand: 3x+9

Michael = 3B, therefore M=3(x+3)
Expand: 3x+9

:)

I think you got it wrong.

Bill ran 3 min faster than Peter, therefore B= x - 3 , if x= Peter.

Michael ran 3 times faster than Bill, therefore, 3M=B.

You got it the other way round, I think.

Thought his answer was a bit off...
