874823 2010-04-10 05:56:00 Hey all,

We are getting quotes. How open are the guys if you say, I have a heat pump and can you install them? I see that most of them supply a heat pump when you request a quote.

Just comparing b/c some say the govt scheme may not be as cheap as buying your own one and get it installed without the subsidy.

Insulation to be done sometime this month :D

PS. The guys from the appliance stores who do them, as estimated by the guys there are a bit $$$, $900 for a back to back wall installation to well over a grand if you include ducting ....

874824 2010-04-10 07:21:00 There is no way that you would want to install a heat pump as a DIY

Buy from a reputable supplier and let the experts to do it.

874825 2010-04-10 07:26:00 Comes down to what you want and how involved the work is.

Back to back is cheaper than running cables and ducting away from the source.

Multi Split Units tend to be dearer than separate units.

Then you have Heap Pumps with Inverters and some with out.

Then you have one's like the Daikens which have 7/24 4 programable settings verse units with no or a single program setting to be done each day.

We got part of our house done before last winter and that cost $6000 but that was for 2 separate units, one of them was a larger unit to cover the lounge, dining and kitchen, quite a large area in that while the other was for the master bedroom and ensuite. Neither unit was back to back owing to the design of the house.

We are currently doing the childrens bedrooms, separate units, 7/24 programable remotes so they cannot fiddle, back to back install.

You hear horror stories about the cost of running heatpumps, part of it comes down to house design/roof installation, part of it is people trying to save money getting a unit too small for the area to be heated, etc.

Our heating bill last year was less than the year before when we had gas bottles. Based on the previous years gas bill, 3 gas heaters for winter cost more than the lounge heatpump running all day at 20 degree's and the bedroom running at night at 17.

The heatpump was installed by a company that only does heatpumps so no doubt the cost could have higher than from a toaster shop.

By comparsion, my neice went to a toaster shop for hers, paid half as much as we did, then had to pay install costs on top of that, they sold her a unit which was not suitable for the area to be heated, etc. We also looked at units from the same toaster shop but the sales rep that came to measure up the house only came 4 hours late, couldn't answer any questions, and gave us two days to say yes or no though the quote said was good for 30 days, then when he got no answer rung us at 10pm to ask what our intentions were.

End of the day though, we are very happy with our heatpumps, the power bill while higher than usual, is still less than the previous year of mixed power and gas, the house is dryer and better for the children.

It might have also helped us, in that I laid down a second layer of R3 pink batts thoughout the roof and up the framework where the split level joins the roof space.

874826 2010-04-10 07:32:00 To add to what Zippity said, unless you really know how to do a heatpump setup, let the experts do it.

Plus there is wiring involved and that needs to be signed off by a certified electrician doesn't it.

Plus could void the warranty if you do it yourself and fry it.

874827 2010-04-10 07:44:00 Yeah, we are getting people to do them. I was just thinking about how they would feel if you say, I have bought my heat pump from Noel Leeming or such and can you install it?

I just thought that they would make less money that you bought your own heat pump ....

We had some people come in. They quote the heat pump an the installation fee. I find that the installation fee is quite less at $500 but they gave a similar quote for a Daikin unit that is usually charged for a Mitsubishi. I went to some shops today, the installation is min of $900, Consumer NZ says $800-1500. I also found that some heat pumps are quite a bit cheaper, like you can can get LG, Toshiba, Samsung, the Pana's a bit cheaper too than the Mitsi's.

A separate question: how is Bond and Bond, I don't mind but folks say they know a person who got a TV exchange that was maybe a returned unit from another customer. The heat pumps at Bond/Bond were quite a bit cheaper than across the road to Harvey Norman. A 5kW Mitsi floor standing unit was almost 45% cheaper than the same unit from HN.

874828 2010-04-10 08:02:00 I should read the question you posed before barking up a different reply.....

If you got the unit from NL and wanted a third party to install it, I doubt they would care. They would have there suggested installers for you to try but you would be welcome to go with your preferred installer.

PowerStore and Noel Leemings and the like probably don't do any in house heat pump installs so if you bought from say BB and approached NL's installer who would probably be a 3rd party, they probably would just treat it as another job.

As for Bond and Bond, if you are sure the unit you want is the right unit for the area you want to heat and it is at a good price and is still a good price after you add on the 3rd party installer and his parts/costs, then you might be onto a winner.

Mitsui and Deikins do seem to be dearer than the Panasonics, LG, etc though I don't know if that applies across the range of each maker.

The Warehouse last year had some really *cheap* heatpumps from a unknown brand.....:waughh:

874829 2010-04-10 08:10:00 Thanks for that.

We might now just get some quotes from installers if we buy the heat pump ourselves. My mum feels she wants to spend more for quality. She thought Daikin was crap b/c we couldn't find them in the shops, looks like she feels better with Mitsi, haha....

We might or might not flagg the govt subsidy scheme .....

PS. Yeah. I was a bit surprised at the $400-500 installation fee b/c we need to drill it downstairs and pipe it outside from the garage. From my other research back to back wall installation might cost $900 so I am not sure if they are overcharging us for the heat pump. At least we had a quote a 6KW Mitsi $3700 with installation without subsidy but a $4500 for a Daikin unit and installation (same 6kW).

Re: Bond/Bond, I don't think my mum trust them, :p in their words they may pay a grand or more to get the same thing away from them..

874830 2010-04-10 08:28:00 Edit. The Daikin might be the same to the Mitsi now. They might of worded the heat pump and installation together with additional $400-500 for more complex ducting .... that makes sense :D Nomad (952)
874831 2010-04-10 08:32:00 Nothing wrong with Daikins:clap though probably also at the higher end of the price range.

We have Daikins ourselves, cannot remember why we picked Daikins over any other brand but we have no regrets in getting them.

Don't know anything about this govt sub but we would most likely be outside there salary cut off anyway. Never looked into it.

874832 2010-04-10 08:38:00 Nah everyone gets a subsidy I think $500. Available to everyone.
If they have a community service cards (landlords or tenants) they get $1200.
Subsidy for insulation as well 33% to all or 60% for those CSC holders.

I am not sure what to think. Some say to me that you might be on the waiting line b/c it is very popular and they need to wait for money from the govt, haha.

I've also heard that some say if you buy it without the discount scheme, it would be cheaper b/c some suppliers jack up the price.

If it was me I might get a Samsung or Pana or LG and keep the extra money :D
They are so fussy. We been at this for over a month, trying to get EECA accredited guys to give us a quote took just that long.
