1148254 2010-10-28 00:59:00 Hi all. I've got a tarball file, and I need some help extracting it. So far, I've only tried 7zip on it, but that didn't work out too well...

Oh yeah, it's 218Gb too. Any ideas? Thanks.

1148255 2010-10-28 01:07:00 Is it just a tarball or is it also gzipped or bz2? Chilling_Silence (9)
1148256 2010-10-28 01:09:00 No, it's just a regular tarball now.

It was originally 'only' 14Gb, because it was also compressed using 7zip.

1148257 2010-10-28 01:30:00 This will extract it for you:
tar -xf filename.tar

If you're on Windows, grab Filzip (http://www.filzip.com/) - that should be able to extract it just fine.

Out of interest, what's the project? Full dumps of Wikipedia aren't trivial.

1148258 2010-10-28 01:30:00 So who decompressed the original file? That's quite possibly where things have gone wrong ... Chilling_Silence (9)
1148259 2010-10-28 01:49:00 Just using filzip now, it seems to be working.

Yes, it's a static HTML dump of wikipedia. I decompressed the file using 7zip to get the tarball out, 7zip only wets it pants at the 218Gb tarball.

1148260 2010-10-28 02:20:00 J...7zip only wets it pants at the 218Gb tarball.Mmm, most people use a stream filter to extract a compressed tarball; it's somewhat unusual to decompress the whole thing first. Erayd (23)
1148261 2010-10-28 02:25:00 I'm not sure... all I know is that, originally, it ended with .tar.7z and now it ends with .tar ...

I need to brush up on my POSIX...

1148263 2010-10-28 02:40:00 No, that's why I have WinHTTrack installed ;)

I'm looking into the possibility of slimming it down to a more managable size and putting it on mobile devices.

before anyone starts, yes, I know about the exisiting software out there, wikitaxi, etc. Nothing out there has a 'dump to html' option.

Paired with a mobile browser, it could be something.

Yes, I am aware that it's 218Gb for a reason...
