875797 2010-04-12 18:58:00 Hi Guys
As a war movie buff and amateur historian, and as a fan of Band of Brothers etc and as one how has been waiting for the Pacific for 2 years I was very very keen to watch the first episode on tv last night.

I must admit I was a little disappointed, it did not seem to have the same appeal as Band of Brothers, I could not get into the characters, we were invading a small island half way through the first episode. The invasion was a picnic.

Episode 2 had better be good.

What were your thoughts ?

875801 2010-04-12 20:15:00 From Spielberg I would have expected a much better movie. Very disapointed and I wont waste time on the next episodes. No continuity an poor acting. Bryan (147)

875803 2010-04-12 21:24:00 Well like it or not this is history re-enacted.

On August 7, 1942, U.S. Marines landed on the northern beaches of Guadalcanal after Navy ships fired onto the island ahead of them. Over the next three months, the Marines secured the airfield and a 6 mile wide section of the beach.

On October 13, an Army unit arrived to reinforce the Marines. The Marines and Army soldiers repelled a Japanese attack on the 23rd, inflicting heavy losses on the Japanese and pushing the Japanese out further during the rest of the month.

On November 4th, the U.S. Infantry fought 1,500 Japanese troops that landed on the beach at Koli Point. They killed half the Japanese force. The rest escaped into the jungle.

In mid-November, the U.S. Navy fought the Japanese at the Battle of Guadalcanal, when the Japanese attempted a major reinforcement of troops via the "Tokyo Express" run of supply-laden destroyers. In this four-day battle, the U.S. Navy foiled the reinforcement effort, and only 4,000 of 10,000 Japanese troops reached land.

875804 2010-04-12 21:30:00 We quite liked it. Didn't watch Band of Brothers. If there ever was a TV program that cried out for AC3 audio this was it. Guess the cardigan wearing pack of public servants who run TVNZ have nerver heard of 5.1 audio.. Also and I wonder if this was a condition of purchase there were no squashed end credits and voice-overs that TVNZ seems to love doing these days at the end of all it's prime time programs.. paulw (1826)
