Anyway, as long as you're using their new DNS servers you should be OK, otherwise the likes of YouTube is unbearably slow.

...

Telecom's new dns: 202.27.158.40
202.27.156.72

Is this the one?

875674 2010-04-13 04:26:00 Yup they're the "new" ones. Unfortunately the likes of OpenDNS are pretty much out, if you want things to be reliable.

Yes, even VPN traffic is shaped to a certain degree, thought not quite so much, and as far as I'm aware it's even less-so if it's NZ-based VPN traffic.

I game nightly, and have started a VPN gaming service for NZ'ers, I *know* that you can game reliably on it, however to what degree with what games varies. I *do* find that on the odd occasion using Battle.net that connections to australians are slightly higher than they should be, where usually they're 40 -> 70ms, they get up to 150 -> 200ms at times.
I literally keep a window open at all times (and game in a window) so I can see what my connection times are to my VPS locally here in Auckland, and it also plots graphs so I can see the connection each client has to me. I host 2-3 games a night 4-5 times a week, so I can certainly vouch for both Battle.net games and same for gaming over VPN connections.

Ping times to overseas is never the best for gaming, that's why ideally you should stick with just NZ / Aus, however I'm unsure if the likes of WoW give you that ability, do they?

875675 2010-04-13 11:54:00 Youtube is generally fine, gaming seems to be fine. Torrenting is terrible.

General browsing is fine and most downloads vary from 5k to 1mb, usually get 800k out of microsoft and 1mb+ from steam

875676 2010-04-13 12:36:00 Mixed results here:

Bittorrent works well most of the time, as does HTTP\FTP downloads etc (I can saturate my connection with both)

Gaming is usually OK although I don't do much online gaming anyway. Battlefield 1942, Entropia Universe and Trackmania mostly - sometimes I get issues with Trackmania (but only on servers in other countries and with a LOT of people)

Rapidshare and it seems all other similar sites are ABSOLUTE RUBBISH. Dialup speed or worse. Never get anything more than 10KB/s out of any of them anymore. Quite annoying when you are actually trying to use them for something legal too.

Youtube is a mixed bag, overall it's pretty good but sometimes the speed is terrible.

Sometimes everything goes really bad, I guess under periods of high Internet usage by a lot of people.

Not much has changed coming from Go Large, except Rapidshare which is just pathetic, and Bittorrent which has got better, probably due to the faster upload.

875677 2010-04-13 13:35:00 Pro Plan:
.
.
.
Downloading: Very fast at any given time . Using Hotfile/Rapidshare I average 800+kb/s .

Are torrents on capped plans such as this one fast as well?

875678 2010-04-13 13:47:00 From Telecom:

When the network is busy (generally inside the hours of 9am and 2am) you may notice reduced speeds, in particular you are likely to see reduced speeds in relation to file sharing traffic and online gaming.

875679 2010-04-13 14:49:00 Well I finally got somewhere with one of Telecom's monkeys, got my email forwarded to the Big Time product manager. HAHA Netsukeninja (13296)

If you have a premium account you can bypass the throttling.

No idea - I hate torrents and never use them.

Nothing more fun than getting 1/2 through downloading a large file and then all your 'buddies' round the world decided to stop sharing - zing! no more file for you

Yeah but the amount of times I actually use Rapidshare for anything, It would be a waste of money.

Also, I heard some people were getting decent speeds out of it, even without paying (and on Big Time)

I think it's just luck of the draw, some people always have terrible Youtube on Big Time and some don't...
