875817 2010-04-13 01:50:00 I get sick of war stuff. Husband watches History Channel all the time, which should be renamed World War 2 channel.

But. I watched Apocalypse (which weirdly, he didn't). That was the best doco on WW2 I have seen. It used real footage, not soldier footage, but stuff taken by civilians, soldiers themselves etc.

So no, rah, tah, we're winning lads stuff, just the nitty gritty blood, gore, and massive sadness war really is.

That Pacific thing was like a tea party........

875819 2010-04-13 04:36:00 The fact is Safari,it is badly acted, has B movie feeling to it.

I think mostly we are addressing the production, not what the yanks did.

875820 2010-04-13 05:24:00 The Japanese attack "Turkey-shoot" was a bit unreal.

My father-in-law was a Marine 1st Sgt. and fought at Guadacanal. He is still kicking around at 89 years old and over the years I have spoken with him many times about his war experiences. Interestingly, he used the term "turkey shoot" and yes such things did happen. I have read several detailed accounts of what the Marines had to face and considering the limitations of a television series, I believe The Pacific is about as good as we can expect. One of the characters in the film (Phillips, I think) is still alive and gave much advice to Speilberg and Tom Hanks; this vet says that they did a great job making The Pacific authentic.

Having said all the above, I must admit I was disappointed that the first episode only lasted an hour. I also felt that it was not as good as Band of Brothers, but as 'lagbort' says in his post, it will probably take time to feel connected to the characters. A problem comparing The Pacific with Band of Brothers is that the fighting takes place in the jungle, on islands - not in France or Germany. I think most of us can feel a connection with Europe rather than the Solomon Islands.

If you find that believable have you read all the criticism of its accuracy?

875822 2010-04-13 07:31:00 I just love how people comment "that was so realistic". Like their were there to be able to compare. It is what it is, realistic or not.
And dam, I missed it, really enjoyed band of brothers.

875823 2010-04-13 09:36:00 Firstly surprised that anyone on here would watch it on broadcast TV .

Five weeks in (half way already) and I'm quite enjoying it, this weeks episode was pretty well done I thought, the beach landing scene at Peleliu was the highlight so far for me (glad I wasn't there though) .

The third episode in Melbourne was a bit slow, but I guess it portrayed that it wasn't all full on battles .

I don't know if I could watch it on TV 1 though, advertisements would just annoy the hell out of me .

How on earth do you spoil an historical event? I don't know what the last five episodes are about but I can pretty much guess because I know what happened in the war (and I watched two Clint Eastwood movies!!). I hadn't heard of anyone I knew until today, who wasn't up to episode five.

Either way - I wrote nothing I can see that would spoil it.

I won't tell you who won the war if that helps at all.:)

875826 2010-04-13 11:41:00 Since my last post, I went over to my father-in-law's house. He watched The Pacific and said it was realistic enough. On Guadacanal he was at a different location than that of The Pacific but he said the jungle scenes were similar to the fighting he did in Saipan. He watched the naval battle at night and could see the red hot shells arcing through the air. He and his men knew that 30,000 to 40,000 Japs were due to land and they thought they "had had it", but the next day American planes and ships destroyed several troop carrier ships. Even so, he said many Japs did manage to land and out-numbered the Marines about 7 to 1. BTW, I use the term 'Japs' to indicate how brutal and inhumane the Japanese military was in WW2. Time has passed and it is a different story these days...

I will never forget the time when my f-in-law was describing a battle where some of his buddies were killed by the Japs. He was choked with emotion and a moment later in walked a young Japanese man (a teacher from a visiting school group) that my wife had brought home. I held my breath because my f-in-law has a very quick and mean temper and I expected him to go wild but amazingly he stood up with a smile and shook the man's hand, then took him to the Soldier's Club to play snooker.
