875874 2010-04-13 09:21:00 I was meaning programs with the 'HD' logo on TVNZ are simply upscaled to 720p, not 720p native.

Everything else without the HD logo is left as it originally was. It -is- noticably blurrier than the upscaled stuff, but it still pales in comparison to programs on TV3

yeah it's the other way around. Stuff with no HD are upscaled (which is about 90% of content) with the HD ones being native.

875875 2010-04-13 22:45:00 Even youtube now supports 720. I dont think anyone would call that real HD.

I guess its all dependent on the true definition of HD
YouTube does 1080P as well.

Anything from 720P up is considered HD.

875877 2010-04-14 00:39:00 The trouble for me when watching 1080p videos from Youtube is they don't D/L fast enough when playing.

hhmm, I dont think so, eg the news and when they cross to live reporters is not upscaled. Is upscaling done on the fly or before broadcast?
I've never watched shortland street, but I'll watch it to see the upscaling.

I think its just that TVNZ is cheap and is not purchasing the HD versions of programs as it is cheaper to upscale some SD content and slap on an HD logo...

The only way to be sure is to take a screen cap of TVNZ's HD content and compare it with the actual HD clip and see if the detail is the same.
